Etrastigma - Vitaceae - Cultivation and care of Tetrastigma plants
HOW TO GROW AND CARE FOR OUR PLANTS
The Tetrastigma they are generous climbing plants that can be grown both in pots and in the ground.
Species: see the paragraph on "Main species"
The genre Tetrastigma cincludes beautiful evergreen climbing plants native to tropical Asia belonging to family of Vitaceae.
They are plants that can be grown both in the apartment and in the garden, if climatic conditions allow it and in both cases they reach considerable dimensions. Being climbing plants, they are well suited to adorn walls or racks thanks to their very rapid growth, they create very beautiful covers.
They have a curious feature: if they are disturbed, the plant drops some buds which then grow back without any damage to the plant.
There are several species among which the most widespread and cultivated is the
There Tetrastigma voinierianum is an evergreen climbing plant native to Laos and is characterized by large glossy leaves each consisting of smaller leaves each up to 20 cm long of a beautiful intense green color which on the lower page are covered with hairs with a red-brown color. The sturdy branches are also thickly hairy and red-brown in color.
It is the only species of the genus that can be bred in an apartment where, however, it does not bloom. In nature, flowering is summer.
The Tetrastigma they are plants that grow at temperatures around 21-24 ° C during the summer period while during the winter around 13-16 ° C. They can also withstand lower temperatures but for short periods.
It is a plant that needs good lighting but not direct sun.
It does not like sudden changes in temperature and cold air currents.
The leaves of the plant, due to the hair, seem dusty. Obviously this hair should not be removed and foliar polishes should never be used.
During the spring and summer the Tetrastigmait should be watered regularly so that the soil remains moist, taking care that there are no stagnant water in the saucer. During the autumn-winter period, watering will be reduced so that the soil remains barely humid.
They are plants that can tolerate short periods of drought.
They love the humid therefore, during the hottest seasons, the plant takes advantage of regular nebulizations to the fronds. Furthermore, it is advisable to place the plant on a saucer in which gravel or other material will have been placed on which the pot will be placed. A trickle of water will be left in the gravel so that by evaporating, there will be greater humidity around the plant. Make sure that the bottom of the pot is never in contact with water.
TYPE OF SOIL - REPOT
The Tetrastigma they are plants that must be repotted every year, in spring using a good fertile soil. Pots of two sizes larger than the previous one are gradually used until they reach the size of about 30 cm. After that every year the surface layer of the soil is removed for 2-5 cm and replaced with fresh soil.
When repotting it is advisable to place in the pot some special stakes on which to anchor the plant so that it has a more regular and harmonious growth.
During the spring-summer period a liquid fertilizer is diluted in the irrigation water every 2-3 weeks, slightly decreasing the doses compared to what is reported in the package.
It is advisable to use complete fertilizers that is to say that in addition to having the so-called macroelements such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) there are also microelements such as iron (Fe), manganese (Mn ), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), boron (B), molybdenum (Mo), all important for plant growth.
There Tetrastigma in the apartment does not bloom. In nature, flowering is summer.
For the Tetrastigma we cannot speak of real pruning. They simply eliminate the leaves that dry out to prevent them from transmitting parasitic diseases.
The multiplication of Tetrastigmaoccurs by cuttings.
MULTIPLICATION FOR TALEA
Between spring and mid-summer, 10-13 cm long cuttings are taken by cutting them immediately under the node and obliquely. The cut must be done with a clean, disinfected (possibly flame-retarded) and sharp knife to avoid fraying of the fabrics. The lower leaves are removed and the cut surface is treated with a rhizogenic powder to favor rooting.
The cuttings are planted in a wet soil consisting of three parts of peat and one of coarse sand.
The pot with the cuttings is arranged in the dark and with temperatures around 18-21 ° C enclosed inside a transparent plastic cap to keep the heat and humidity constant. Use sticks that you will place in the ground to keep the plastic away from the cutting.
The plastic must be removed and put back every day both to control the humidity of the soil (it must always be very humid) and to eliminate any condensation that has formed on the plastic. Generally the cuttings root within a couple of months and we realize their rooting because the first buds begin to appear. At that point the Tetrastigma can be planted in the permanent pot with a soil as indicated for adult plants of Tetrastigma and treat themselves as such.
PARASITES AND DISEASES
The leaves dry out very quickly and fall off
This symptom may be due to exposure of the plant to direct sun.
Remedies: remove the damaged leaves and immediately move the plant in a bright position but not in direct sun.
The leaves lose their shiny appearance
This symptom could be caused by both excessive watering and too low temperatures.
Remedies: analyze how you have raised the plant so far based on the indications given in this sheet and adjust accordingly. In any case it is good, when the plant of Tetrastigma has these symptoms check the roots as often the combination of too much water with too cold can cause problems with the root system. If, checking the roots, you notice that there are rotten roots, remove them, with a clean and disinfected scissors and sprinkle on a broad spectrum fungicide powder and repot with new soil.
The leaves turn yellow and there are small yellow-brown spots
This symptom typically highlights a spider mite infestation, a mite. If you look at the underside of the leaves, you will also notice thin cobwebs.
Remedies: increase the ambient humidity which avoids the proliferation of the parasite.Only in the case of serious infestations intervened with specific acaricides.
Presence of small whitish insects on the plant
Aphids, or as they are commonly called lice, are small mobile insects that are often found on all green parts of the plant.
Remedies: it is necessary to intervene with specific pesticides easily available from a good nurseryman.
The name Tetrastigma comes from the Greek Tetra "Four" and stigma "Stigma" to indicate the fact that the stigma is divided into four parts, one exception among the Vitaceae.
