Description of Ostara strawberries

Description of Ostara strawberries

Strawberries are a favorite berry not only for children, but also for adults, because they are the first to come to our table after a long winter. In any garden area, there is always room for several strawberry bushes. It is best if it is a remontant strawberry of the Ostara variety, which yields a harvest from June to frost.

Description of the Ostara strawberry variety

The variety belongs to reliable and time-tested varieties of remontant strawberries of neutral daylight hours, characterized by continuous fruiting, since fruit set does not depend on the length of daylight hours.

Ostara is distinguished by its early maturity and consistently high yields. Low compact bushes reach height 25 cm.

Ostara belongs to the early-medium ripening varieties. The harvest of the first berries is small and falls on the beginning of June, the main harvest, accounting for up to 80% of the total, occurs in August - September and lasts until the frost. According to the description, the yield of the Ostar bush is up to 1.2 kg.

A feature of this variety is the ability to harvest on young bushes that have grown from a mustache, separated from the mother bush and rooted.

Characteristics of berries

Ostar berries are cone-shaped, medium-sized. The fruits of the first harvest are large in weight up to 75 g., berries of subsequent harvests tend to crush, and their average weight is 15 g.

The berries are bright red, with an even glossy surface and a delicate texture of loose flesh. Ostara fruits are sour - sweet, aromatic and very tasty.

Breeding and growing conditions

Ostara is a type of remontant strawberry bred by Dutch breeders in 1969. The variety is obtained by crossing the Masharakhs Daurernthe and Red Gauntlet varieties. The selection result is unpretentiousness of the variety to climatic conditions and soils.

Due to its high winter hardiness, it can grow in most of the territory of Russia and neighboring countries.

Advantages and disadvantages

Like all varieties, Ostara has both advantages and disadvantages.

The advantages of the variety are:

  • sweet, rich taste of wild strawberry;
  • continuous flowering and abundant fruiting;
  • unpretentiousness to growing conditions;
  • increased resistance to fungal diseases (except for gray rot).

This variety is an excellent pollinator for remontant strawberry varieties.

The disadvantages include:

  • Ostara belongs to varieties of intensive (accelerated) fruiting, which, as a result of continuous flowering and fruiting, age quickly, berry plantings need updating every 2 years;
  • shrinking fruits the next year after planting;
  • poor transportability of berries due to the soft consistency of the fruit;
  • short shelf life of fruits.

Planting seedlings

The cultivation of remontant strawberries is somewhat different from the cultivation of ordinary ones, due to the fact that the continuous fruiting of the bushes depletes them and there is a danger of the death of the bushes after harvest.

They plant berries only on well-lit places, then the berry will be sweet. When planted in the shade, the yield will be insignificant, the plants will not develop well.

Seedlings can be planted in the spring or at the end of August when the heat subsides. Young rosettes and rooted whiskers are used as seedlings.

Planting holes located at a distance 50 cm apart, fill with humus or compost, apply ash and complex mineral fertilizers add perlite or vermiculite to the soil to improve the structure of the soil and retain moisture and nutrients. The soil in the holes is well mixed and it is advisable to add vermiculite on top again.

Planting seedlings in a light and poor composition soil, which is vermiculite, will stimulate the growth of the root system of seedlings, the roots of which, in search of nutrition, will have to grow vigorously.

Experienced gardeners prefer square-nest planting. Its essence consists in planting 3 plants in a nest (hole) in the form of a triangle. In this case, the distance between plants 10 cm, and between the nests 50 cm.

Water the planted seedlings with a solution of Epin or Zircon, for better rooting of seedlings and relieving stress after planting. The next day, the beds are watered with Fitosporin solution to prevent diseases and enhance the immunity of strawberries.

When planting seedlings, you need do not deepen the "heart", the place where young leaves grow. It should be above ground level.

All peduncles appearing after planting during the season must be removed, allowing the plants to take root well. The hardened strawberry bushes will give a full harvest next year.

Further care consists in regular watering, loosening and feeding.

Strawberries, and especially varieties of neutral daylight hours, very hygrophilous, the soil underneath should always be moist. Therefore, planting needs to be mulched. Mulch will not only maintain soil moisture and relieve loosening, but will restrain the growth of weeds and the berries will be clean from the earth.

You can use straw, sawdust, grass cuttings and dark covering material as mulch.

Top dressing

Ostar strawberries need a lot of nutrients for continuous fruiting throughout the season. They are brought into the soil throughout the season, both dry and liquid.

The following are used as dressings:

  • wood ash, humus, compost, which are poured under the bushes of plants;
  • complex mineral fertilizers;
  • fermented herbal infusions;
  • infusions of bird droppings and mullein.

The application of organic fertilizers and mineral fertilizers alternate.

Care for strawberry plantations also includes the removal of excess whiskers growing from the main bush during the growing season. To avoid plant depletion remove all mustache, leaving only the first one extending from the bush. It is the strongest and can be used as a seedling when replacing plantings.

Preparing planting strawberries for winter consists in adding soil to the bare roots of plants, applying fertilizers and mulching the beds with humus, fallen leaves, sawdust, and peat.

As Ostara ages quickly, new strawberry beds need to be planted every year.

Gray rot

The disease manifests itself at high air humidity, thickened plantings and affects all parts of the plant. Crop losses due to disease can be as high as 80%.

In order to avoid disease, planting strawberries should be well ventilated, it is necessary to exclude contact of plants with the soil for this, mulching of berry plantings is performed. Plants do not overfeed with nitrogen fertilizersso that they do not build up an excess mass of leaves and do not thicken.

For the prevention of the disease, preventive spraying of plantings is carried out at the beginning of the growing season, with regrowth of leaves, with a 3.0% solution of Bordeaux liquid. At the end of budding and after harvesting, spraying with a 1.0% solution of colloidal sulfur is necessary.

To combat the disease, fungicides are used: Strobi, Switch, Euparen, Bayleton, Kaptan or the biological product Alirin-B.

Brown spot

Brown spot appears with thickened plantings of strawberries, high air humidity and sudden changes in air temperature.

To prevent the disease in early spring, it is necessary remove dry leaves, on which the presence of overwintered fungus is possible... Blue spraying of overwintered plantations with 3.0% Bordeaux mixture. Mulching the soil under the plants.

In the presence of a disease, the following fungicides are used: Skor, Strobi; Fundazol.

Powdery mildew

When strawberries are affected by powdery mildew, the leaves turn purple, curl and become covered with a grayish bloom.

To prevent the spread of the disease in early spring, plants should be treated with a pink solution of manganese or colloidal sulfur.

To combat the disease, fungicides are used: Topaz, Fundazol, Tilt, Strobi and Fitosporin-M.

Strawberry pests

Strawberry mite

One of the most dangerous strawberry pests. Damage to the young leaves of plants by the mite leads to their curling and yellowing. The plant stops growing. In case of mass damage, the death of all plants is possible.

To combat the pest, use a solution of Karbofos or colloidal sulfur, in early spring and after harvest.

Strawberry nematode

Nematode damage manifests itself in deformation and twisting of leaves... Leaf cuttings become brittle and break easily. Affected plants practically do not bear fruit.

At the first sign of a nematode, infected plants must be removed from the site and burned.

Spider mite

The presence of a spider mite on plants is manifested by the appearance of cobwebs on plants, leaves begin to turn yellow and dry.

To combat the pest, you need to treat the strawberries after harvesting with a solution of Karbofos and, if possible, cover for 3 hours with plastic wrap.

Having planted this variety on your site, you will enjoy the sweet berry from the beginning of summer to the very frost.

Strawberry Ostara

Orchard strawberry Ostara is a variety of remontant strawberries of Dutch origin, obtained by crossing Red Gauntlet and Masharakhs Daurernthe varieties. The Ostar strawberries were bred by Dutch breeders who successfully completed their mission in the late sixties. This strawberry is a neutral of the day (NDV) variety. It will provide an almost constant abundance of fruits, from June until the first frost, thanks to the continuous flowering and setting of young berries.

As a rule, the first June harvest is not so rich, but the second strawberry harvest, falling in August-September, makes up about 60-80% of the total harvest. Since not all bushes can handle such a load, some of them may even die after harvesting. It is in demand among novice and experienced gardeners due to its special qualities.

Description of the variety

Back in the distant sixties of the last century, Dutch breeders managed to breed the Ostara strawberry variety by crossing the Masharakhs Daurernte and Red Gauntlet varieties. The Ostara strawberry belongs to the neutral day varieties. Even when cultivated in ordinary open-air beds, it will be able to bring you a harvest of wonderful berries from June until the first snow. Moreover, the autumn harvest in terms of taste is in no way inferior to early berries, and may differ only in the size of the fruits in the direction of their decrease. But the productivity of the bushes by the fall can only increase, naturally, subject to regular watering and dressing throughout the growing season. For the entire warm season, you can collect about 1.0-1.2 kg of fragrant and tasty strawberries from one bush.

True, experts do not recommend leaving the fertile bushes of this strawberry variety for the next year, but replacing them with young plants. Since both the yield and the size of the berries in the next season can greatly disappoint you.

Ostara strawberry bushes have a rather compact appearance and do not exceed 20-25 cm in height. Dark green medium-sized leaves are covered with fine hairs.

Attention! Flowering and, accordingly, the setting of berries occurs during the season not only on mother bushes, but also on young plants that form on rooted whiskers.

The assimilation ability is average, depending on the regularity and composition of the dressings. The more nitrogen content in the fertilizers used, the more whiskers and young rosettes will be formed. But this can negatively affect the yield and especially the taste of the berries. Therefore, you should not be zealous with this.

Ostara strawberries are resistant to most fungal diseases, except gray mold. Therefore, in rainy weather, it is advisable to provide berries with additional shelter, if possible.

Ostara bushes tolerate winter frosts well, but when grown in the northernmost regions, it is better to slightly cover the plants for the winter. It tolerates frosts down to -15 ° C without shelter. However, this is important only in regions with little snowy winters. Because under a large, constant layer of snow, Ostar strawberries overwinter well.

This variety tolerates hot conditions worse, at temperatures above + 28 ° C, pollen can become sterile and the number of berries decreases sharply.

Characteristics of berries

The following characteristics are inherent in Ostar strawberries:

  • The shape of the fruit is traditional cone-shaped, the berries are attractive in appearance, have a shiny surface.
  • The color of the berries is uniform bright red.
  • Although the Ostar strawberry belongs to large-fruited varieties, its berries are rather average in size - about 20-30 grams each. In especially favorable conditions, the mass of the berry can reach 60-70 grams.
  • The berries do not differ in density, but they are very juicy.
  • They are stored for a very short time, they are practically unsuitable for transportation.
  • But the taste can be called unique, it is very reminiscent of real wild strawberries. The aroma of the berries is also pronounced. By their taste, Ostar strawberries received 4.7 points on a five-point scale.
  • The use of Ostara strawberries is universal, but they are most tasty when fresh.

Strawberry care is easy. It needs to be watered, loosened and fed. Mulch will help to get rid of weeds. The berries will not touch the ground and will remain clean.

In order for strawberries to bear fruit continuously, they are fed:

  1. With humus, ash, compost.
  2. Fermented herbal infusions.
  3. Infusions of mullein, bird droppings.
  4. Complex mineral fertilizers.

Organic and mineral fertilizers alternate. Before the winter season, soil is poured onto the bare roots of plants, the beds are fertilized, mulched.

We guarantee the quality of Ostara strawberry seedlings and are responsible for their safety on the way. Thanks to professional packaging and a closed root system, Ostara strawberry seedlings reach any region of the country in excellent condition.

Strawberry-strawberry "OSTARA" REVIEWS of gardeners.

We discuss the taste of the Ostara variety, yield, winter hardiness, disease resistance and other qualities. Characteristics of the variety, advantages and disadvantages. Growing Ostar strawberries in the northern and southern regions in open ground and in greenhouses, fruiting dates.Reviews of gardeners about the Ostara strawberry variety from different regions of the country: we answer questions, share impressions, boast of crops, exchange photos.

Features of agricultural technology

Even a beginner will be able to grow Andreas strawberries, since caring for it is not much different from other varieties of remontant garden strawberries. The main thing is to take into account agrotechnical standards.

First, you need to prepare a fertile bed with the introduction of peat, humus, compost or mineral fertilizers.

Secondly, when planting strawberries of the San Andreas variety between bushes, there should be at least 30 cm, in row spacings up to 40. It is better to plant seedlings in the fall. Plants are well watered, and the soil is mulched.

Then the landing needs to be updated.

Thirdly, as gardeners note in the reviews, the San Andreas strawberry variety has a high need for watering and feeding. Does not tolerate the slightest drought. The drip irrigation system will help to solve the problem of drying out the beds.

Moreover, even a beginner does not have any special problems with its installation. The simplest drip irrigation can be organized using conventional hoses, as shown in the photo below. How is it more convenient? All strawberry crops disapprove of wetting leaves, flowers and fruits with water. No matter how carefully gardeners use a watering can, strawberries cannot be avoided getting wet.

For the winter, beds in the open field are sheltered from frost. The degree of shelter will depend on the climatic conditions.

Ostara - it turned out to be the same variety that is sold in winter in imported boxes. Only in the store is it grass-grass, and from the garden it is sweet and tasty. Very productive, fruiting until snowy, dense berries, excellent transportability. To make the berries larger, I thinned out both peduncles and ovaries. Very mustachioed variety, two waves of formation, but also bears fruit immediately on young rosettes.

More modern varieties of neutral daylight hours (NSD) are represented by the best varieties of the USA (Albion, Holiday, etc.), Holland (Ostara, Vima Rina and other Vima ... and others) and Great Britain ( "Sweet Eve", "Eve", "Eves Delight"). They give berries virtually without interruption, and whiskers of some varieties bloom in the current season (!) And produce many large berries. That is, red berries are hanging on the same bush at the same time, new flower stalks are blooming and buds are just emerging. But there is also a short break in a couple of weeks from ripe berries to throwing out new buds, the climate also depends on the variety.

Not a bad OSTARA strawberry. So that no one ate from below, I recommend making the props yourself as for flowers. Thick wire can be purchased from the fence net department. Better 3 things per bush.

Ostara is a Dutch variety (not new). One of the most unpretentious and undemanding to soil and climate. A variety for beginner summer residents. The bushes are quite tall, the leaf is dark green, tall, but the leaf blade itself is not large, the peduncles are also long - under the weight of the berries they can lean towards the ground. There are many mustaches. It is drought-resistant in bushes, but the berry is not dense, not transportable, in the very heat it can drop seeds, from which the appearance is completely lost. There are many peduncles, from which the size of the berry is also smaller. The taste is good, sweet.

Alexander Krymsky

Very good taste for autumn harvest. Usually, remontant strawberries in autumn are less sweet than summer ones. The berries are quite large, bright red. Repaired strawberries require good care and enhanced nutrition, since they have almost continuous flowering. It also reproduces with a mustache. I usually leave one or two bushes at the remontant strawberry for propagation - I do not let them bloom.

Svetlana Yurievna

Ostara is one of the most reliable and unpretentious varieties of remontant garden strawberries. She is not capricious in her care and always pleases with an abundant harvest, albeit not very large, but amazingly tasty berries, ripening almost continuously from late June to late autumn. In addition, it easily propagates with a mustache, which allows you to quickly acquire the desired number of plants of this wonderful variety.
