Abundance or Copia, allegorical deity of both Greek mythology that of Latin mythology it is a deity to which no temples or altars were dedicated.

She was represented as a prosperous girl crowned with flowers and surrounded by all sorts of goods who had a sheaf of ears in one hand and a horn in the other, according to some the horn of Acheloos (see Myth of Achelous) and according to others the horn of Amalthea (see Myth of the birth of the world ) filled with fruits and flowers, the so-called cornucopia, symbol of fertility.

Immediately after dethroning Chrono, Zeus joined in Metis, who became pregnant. Gaea and Uranus they informed Zeus that, after giving him a daughter, Metis would give birth to a son stronger than his father destined to overthrow him. Zeus then swallowed Metis, who became one with the god and began to dwell in his head.

When the time came for the birth, Zeus was seized by a terrible headache. He called Hephaestus, the divine blacksmith, who struck an ax blow on Zeus's head. And behold, without bloodshed, a young goddess leapt out of the large wound. This was fully armed, with the helmet, the breastplate, the shield, the spear: an invincible warrior goddess was born. Athena fought wisely, with discipline, with prudence.

The goddess intervened in the quarrel between Achilles is Agamemnon. He took Achilles' side, urging him not to be carried away by anger and not to commit actions that would be condemned by all.
Help Diomedes in the violent battle under the walls of Troy and he guided his blows which were so deadly that they even hit the same Ares.
His favorite was Ulysses, the most poised and most thoughtful hero among those who fought under the walls of Troy, always advised him and led him to exercise wisdom and use ingenuity.

The epithet was attributed to Athena Parthènos, or "virgin". The anecdote of Tiresias, who one day surprised her while she was taking a bath in a river. To punish him, the goddess placed her fingers on his eyes, taking away his ability to see real things, but granting him the gift of clairvoyance in return.

Athena was also the patron goddess of cities and favored everything that ensures the prosperity of citizens: agriculture, trade, the arts. Of all the cities that were under his protection, Athens was the favorite. Here, in the fifth century BC. C., was built in his honor on Parthenon.

Some episodes also place this divinity in relation to typically feminine craft activities such as weaving and embroidery. The famous Penelope's canvas, for example, as it is described in theOdyssey, it was a work to which the wife of Ulysses devoted a good part of her time. She would actually start weaving inspired by Athena, after she promised the Suits that she would have chosen one of them only after having completed a large canvas in memory of her husband now believed dead.

In honor of the goddess the named feasts were celebrated with great sumptuousness Panathenae, who called all the populations of Attica together.

Greek mythology: Zeus

One of the main aspects that characterize ancient Greece is the mythology, which is known both for the wealth of the myths than for the large number of divinity, whose deeds have come down to the present day. Here is a excursus on the most important divinities of ancient Greece.

At the origin of it all was Chaos, a disordered mixture of matter, in which it was not possible to distinguish between sky, sea and earth. Chaos was a true deity capable of generating and his children were often malevolent, enigmatic and capricious deities. One of the first children of Chaos was Destiny or Fate, which could be both benign and hostile to others. Destiny was so powerful that all other deities had to be subjected to him and obey his orders. Among the other sons of Chaos, we remember the Erebus, a bottomless abyss characterized by dense darkness, the Night, dark and mysterious, which could bring to men rest and good advice the Moiras or Fates, three sisters able to determine the Destiny of the men Discord and Old Age. Later more lenient divinities were born, such as Concord, Love or Eros, Day, Uranus (Heaven) and Gaea (Earth). From the union of these divinities, a certain order in Chaos began to emerge.

Birth and characteristics of Greek mythology

GREEK MYTHOLOGY: CHARACTERS - URANUS, ZEUS, ERA

Uranus and the birth of Zeus - Uranus is the first god who reigned over the Universe. He generated with Gaea the most ancient living creatures: the Titans, the Cyclops and the Hecatonchirs. He locked the latter in a secret place on earth and Gaea, furious, convinced her son, the titan Cronus, to oust his father. Cronus married his sister, Rhea, with whom he generated 6 of the 12 Olympian gods: Poseidon, Hades, Estia, Demeter, Hera and Zeus. Cronus feared being ousted by one of his children, as he had done with his father, and for this he swallowed them as soon as they were born. The only one to be saved was Zeus, hidden by his mother in Crete. Becoming an adult, Zeus saved the brothers swallowed by their father, giving rise to a war. Won the war with the father, Zeus became the god of the sky and the lord of the gods on Mount Olympus. His brothers, Poseidon gained power over the sea and Hades over the underworld, while the Earth was ruled in common by all three.

Zeus and Olympus - Zeus he is represented as the god of justice and mercy. He married his sister Era, from which he had Ares (god of war), Hebe (goddess of youth), Hephaestus (god of fire) and Ilizia (goddess of childbirth). Zeus is also described as a lover of several maidens and capable of resorting to any stratagem to hide the betrayals from his wife. Many other children were born from his escapades.

Was - Hera is the queen of the gods, sister and wife of Zeus, daughter of the titan Cronus and Rhea. Goddess of marriage and protector of married women, is represented as a jealous wife, capable of persecuting the lovers and illegitimate children of Zeus. She is famous for her vengeful nature: furious with Paris who preferred Aphrodite to her in a beauty contest, she helped the Greeks during the Trojan War and was satisfied only after the destruction of the city.

Summary of the legendary Trojan War

GREEK MYTHOLOGY: AFRODITE, ESTIA, ERMES, DEMETRA

Aphrodite, Goddess of love and beauty, in Homer's Iliad she is presented as the daughter of Zeus and Dione, while in Hesiod's Theogony it is said that she was born from the foam of the sea. According to Homer, Aphrodite married Hephaestus had as lover Ares, god of war, he rivaled Persephone, queen of the underworld, for the love of Adonis and had a son, Aeneas, by the prince of Troy, Anchises. The main legend linked to Aphrodite concerns the cause of the Trojan War: Eris, goddess of discord, is the only one who has not been invited to the wedding of King Peleus with the marine divinity Thetis. Resentful, she throws a golden apple into the banquet hall, on which the words: "To the most beautiful" are written. Zeus refuses to choose between Hera, Athena and Aphrodite, who turn to Paris, prince of Troy. Each goddess promises him a gift: It was to make him powerful, Athena to bring him military glory and Aphrodite to grant him the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris chooses Aphrodite and asks for Helen, wife of the Greek king Menelaus as a prize. With the kidnapping of Elena, he then unleashes the Trojan War. Various cult titles are attributed to Aphrodite, like Urania, queen of the skies, and Aphrodite Pandemia, goddess of all peoples.

Estia, Goddess of the hearth, eldest daughter of Cronus and Rhea, she is in charge of the sacrificial fires and prayers are addressed to her before and after meals. It appears in a few myths, but most of the cities had a common hearth where the sacred fire burned.

Hermes, messenger of the gods, son of Zeus and Maia (daughter of the titan Atlas). He wears winged sandals, a wide-brimmed hat and a magical goldenrod with intertwined snakes and wings. Leads the souls of the dead to the underworld, possesses magical powers over sleep and dreams and is the god of trade and merchants and keeper of the herds. God of athletes, he protects gymnasiums and stadiums and is responsible for luck and wealth. Hermes is also a dangerous enemy, a swindler and a thief. On the day of his birth, he stole his brother Apollo's cattle, making the herd walk backwards in their footsteps to erase their tracks. He then denied the theft and eventually reconciled with his brother by giving him the lira he had created. Hermes is represented as a bearded and mature man in the earliest art as an athletic, naked and beardless young man in the classical period.

Demeter, Goddess of wheat and crops, she is the daughter of the titan Cronus and Rhea. When her daughter Persephone is kidnapped by Hades, god of the Underworld, Demeter was so pained that she neglected the lands, on which nothing grew and famine struck the whole world. Zeus asked Hades to return Persephone to her mother, who accepted, but first made Persephone eat the grains of a pomegranate which would have forced her to return to him 4 (or 6) months a year. With the return of Persephone, in the spring, Demeter makes flowers, fruits and grain grow on earth in abundance. In the fall, when Persephone returns to the underworld, her pain causes the death of the vegetation and opens the doors to winter.

GREEK MYTHOLOGY: POSEIDON, HADES AND PERSEPHONE, DIONISIO

Poseidon, God of the sea and originally also of earthquakes, is the son of the titan Cronus and Rhea, brother of Zeus and Hades. He is the husband of Amphitrite, one of the nereids, with whom he had a son, Triton. He has had many other love stories, especially with spring nymphs, with whom he has generated numerous children famous for their barbarism and cruelty, such as the giant Orion and the Cyclops Polyphemus. With the gorgon Medusa he conceived Pegasus, the famous winged horse. Poseidon plays a prominent role in many Greek legends and myths: he fought unsuccessfully against Athena for control of Athens after helping Laomedon, king of Troy, to build the city walls, was deprived of the agreed remuneration and retaliated by sending a sea monster to devastate the region and during the Trojan War sided with the Greeks. He is represented as a majestic, bearded character holding a trident, and is often accompanied by a dolphin.

Hades is the god of the dead. Son of the titan Cronus and Rhea, he is the brother of Zeus and Poseidon. After the deposition of Cronus and the partition of the universe, he obtained the underworld, over which he reigns together with the nymph Persephone. It is also known by the name of Pluto, lord of riches, because the crops and precious metals were considered to belong to the kingdom of the Underworld. He is a merciless god and does not allow anyone to return to the world of the living. His palace, which lies in the darkness of the Underworld, is represented as a dilapidated mansion with many gates, crowded with souls and peopled with demons.

Dionysius, son of Zeus and the mortal Semele, is the god of wine and natural life. He taught men about viticulture and winemaking. He is also known as Bacchus and enjoys a particular cult: his followers were called maenads or bacchantes and wandered in the woods celebrating the god in Dionysian intoxication. He was revered in Delphi, where he shared the temple with Apollo and was celebrated with large city festivals, during which theatrical competitions were held. He is represented with a cornucopia and vine shoots or with a thyrsus and a panther-skin cloak.

    Index
