How to grow tomato seedlings in "nappies" according to the method of Galina Kizima

How to grow tomato seedlings in

Living in small city apartments with limited space for growing seedlings on the windowsills, avid gardeners still manage to grow them by the beginning of the planting season. And Galina Kizima's "diaper" method can be very useful here.

Galina Kizima's "diaper" method for growing tomato seedlings

Galina Kizima, the author of many books and articles on gardening, calls her method of growing seedlings in "swaddling clothes" a "method for lazy gardeners."

Galina Kizima invented her own method of growing seedlings in city apartments

The essence of the "diaper" method for tomatoes

The method consists in using not individual cups for growing seedlings, but rectangular pieces of film or food bags. A seedling with a small amount of soil (initially 2 tablespoons) is placed in such a rectangle measuring 20 × 30 cm, then the film is wrapped like a diaper when swaddling a baby (hence the name of the method).

Further, all packages with seedlings should be placed in a pallet, tightly pressed against each other. After the plant has a fourth leaf, you need to unfold the roll and add another tablespoon of soil from below.

You need to water the seedlings as the top layer dries: at cool temperatures - after two to three days, preferably in the evening, on sunny days - every day.

Such "diaper" inhabitants do not interfere with each other

This technology assumes that the root of the plant will develop downwards, and not to the sides. An adult plant will need less watering, as it will itself get water from deeper layers of the soil.

Advantages and disadvantages of "diapers"

This method has already gained a lot of connoisseurs, since it has many advantages:

  • a record number of plants can be placed on a single windowsill;
  • very little land is needed: initially, only two tablespoons for each plant in the "diaper";
  • easy to check the root system of seedlings;
  • it is convenient to transplant plants.

Using the "diaper" method, you can grow an entire "army" of tomatoes

However, the method also has some drawbacks:

  • due to the fact that a minimum of soil is used, the lateral root system is formed weaker than that of seedlings grown in the usual way;
  • plants can stretch. To prevent this from happening, the author advises not to use nitrogen when feeding.

Who is the method suitable for?

This method is especially suitable for those gardeners who cannot constantly be near their plantings. Tomatoes grown in this way need less watering, since the long root will find moisture on its own.

What varieties of tomatoes should be grown in "diapers"

The "diaper" method is less recommended for indeterminate varieties of tomatoes, since the formation of flower brushes may be disturbed, that is, the brush after the "diaper" can branch, which is not the case with normal cultivation. Although the yield of indeterminate "diaper" specimens is also good. But for early maturing, undersized determinant varieties, it is quite suitable.

Determinant tomato varieties are good for "swaddling"

Hybrids are also grown by this method.

According to Galina Kizima, the more transplants, the stronger the plant. She advises to dive tomatoes first into small containers, and then into larger cups.

Step-by-step instructions: "swaddling" seedlings in practice

To properly "swaddle" tomato seedlings, proceed as follows:

  1. Take tomato seeds sprouted in any way.

The seeds have sprouted and are ready to be sent to the "swaddling"

  2. Cut the film into A4 rectangles or use a suitable size packaging bag.
  3. Place 1 tablespoon of slightly damp soil in the upper left corner of the plastic rectangle.

1 tablespoon of soil is poured into the left corner of the rectangle from the film

  4. Lay the seedling on the ground so that its cotyledonous leaves protrude above the edge of the film.
  5. Pour another tablespoon of soil on top of the roots.
  6. Fold the bottom of the film, then roll the film.
  7. Secure the resulting roll with an elastic band.

It will not be difficult to wrap a seedling in a "diaper"

  8. Place the resulting rolls of seedlings in "nappies" in the container.

Such seedlings do not need much space.

  9. Water the plants from above in small portions with water with a small addition of fertilizers, for example, AVA or Kemira-Lux (1 teaspoon per 5 liters of water).

Water the seedlings in "swaddling clothes" from above

I also use a little secret from Galina Kizima when growing seedlings. If the plants clearly do not have enough light, especially on cloudy days, you can put a mirror next to them with the mirror side to the window. This will immediately add light to your seedlings.

Reviews of gardeners after their own experiments with "diapers"

The method of growing seedlings in "nappies" saves space, time and effort. Many who decided to experiment remained in the ranks of the "lazy gardeners". To form your own opinion about the method, you need to try it yourself. What if you like it too?

Vegetable growers call diapers the soil wrapped in a plastic wrap bag, where tomato seedlings are planted. Usually they take a dense material that is used to cover greenhouses, greenhouses. Before the diving procedure, a container is prepared for placing tomato seedlings in diapers into it. The container is chosen in large sizes with high sides. The bottom is covered with a layer of sawdust in order to then place tomato seedlings in diapers on it.

The advantages of this method of picking a vegetable plant include:

  • convenience of the procedure
  • using less soil
  • protection of tomato seedlings from diseases and pests
  • saving space for seedlings.

But besides the advantages of growing tomatoes using the diaper method, there is also a significant drawback associated with the fact that the root system of the plant will develop more slowly, and the light of the seedlings will not be enough. And also, with the intensive growth of a vegetable crop, it will then have to be transplanted into individual pots.

Swaddling tomato seedlings occurs in different ways. You can plant seedlings with two true leaves in a nutritious soil mixture or coconut substrate. And you can pack seeds for seedlings in film, followed by diving the seedlings into separate cups or pots.

Popular ways to plant and grow tomatoes

Tomatoes are grown in different ways, all of them simply cannot be counted. Each gardener can share his own, known only to him, the secrets of planting and growing tomatoes. We will consider the most popular and well-known methods, the use of which is known to many.

Most growing methods are based on saving space, not everyone has a wide window sill for growing seedlings, or on the unwillingness to fiddle with seeds and picking seedlings. It was with these motives that experiments with seeds and ready-made seedlings began:

Galina Kizima's method

Perhaps the most famous non-standard method of growing tomato seedlings in a city apartment is the method of Galina Kizima. The basis is the minimum possible use of soil and complete saving of space when germinating tomato seeds. The so-called “swaddling” is quite effective, and other vegetables can be grown this way.

Germination of seeds can take place without soil, the process proceeds well on toilet paper.

To do this, several layers of ordinary toilet paper are spread on polyethylene and moistened with a spray bottle. Pre-soaked tomato seeds are laid out on it, the distance between each seed should be at least 1 cm, and an indent of 2 cm is made from the edge. After the grains are covered with several layers of paper and moistened in the same way.

Next, the resulting ribbons with seeds are twisted with tight rolls and stirred in some container and sent to a bright and warm place. After the shoots appear and the plants get a little stronger, they will need to be "transplanted" into separate diapers.

To do this, use pieces of polyethylene of a square size with a side of 20 cm. Pour soil into the center of the square, place a seedling in it so that all the leaves are above the polyethylene. After that, the bottom edge is tucked, and then the side edges are tucked so that a tight roll is obtained. Before this, I water the soil abundantly, and then do not wet it for 10-14 days.

Seedlings grown by this method do not require picking, the stems are strong with a large number of leaves, but the rhizome develops poorly. After the appearance of the third pair of true leaves, tomato seedlings are planted in a greenhouse.

Plants are transplanted by the transshipment method, while the hole should be in size, like an earthen lump around the rhizome. Further cultivation is carried out completely without moisture.

Before planting, it is worth cutting off a few lower leaves, and laying out the seedlings with their tops strictly to the north. Before that, a glass of wood ash and a pinch of potassium permanganate are placed in each prepared hole, everything is poured with a bucket (!) Of water, and only when the water is absorbed do the plants begin to be planted.

How to grow tomatoes under cover material in a greenhouse or soil

Tomatoes under the covering material

Tomato seedlings are also grown in a seedless way under a covering material or film. As soon as the ground warms up a little, prepare the bed. They loosen the soil, apply fertilizers there, and moisten. Prepared and processed seeds are sown in shallow grooves, by a maximum of 1 cm. The grains are sprinkled with a layer of soil, watered with warm water and covered... As a covering material, you can use agrofiber or polyethylene. In this way, a greenhouse effect is created, in which the soaked grains sprout much earlier.

Sowing seeds is carried out at a sufficient distance from each other, since transplantation with this method is not carried out.

The method of growing under cover material is designed to save time; it is used more in the southern regions and the middle lane.

Bucket growing method

Growing tomatoes in buckets, according to gardeners' reviews, gives significantly higher yields. Experiments in this regard have been repeatedly carried out, which have confirmed this fact. The method is suitable for greenhouse cultivation; in open space, tomatoes do not bear fruit so abundantly.

It is no longer possible to determine exactly who initiated this method of cultivation. They began to use it due to the lack of planting space for grown seedlings.... A mixture of soil from the site and compost is collected in a bucket, a tomato sprout is planted, watered abundantly. Throughout the entire period of growth until fruiting, as it dries, the soil is periodically watered, during the formation of the ovary, watering is increased. The method allows you to significantly extend the fruiting period of any variety, while vegetables can be grown not only in a greenhouse, but also on balconies and loggias.

Tomatoes in buckets

There is an officially registered method; initially prepared buckets of soil mixture are used for it. It should be noted that according to the recommendations, it is better to dig the container into the ground by 25-30 cm.

With this growing of tomatoes, it is important to carry out a comprehensive feeding of boles three times. Fertilizers in liquid form must be poured directly under the root, it is important to ensure that moisture does not get on the stem and leaves of the plant.

The described methods are recognized as the most common and effective for growing tomatoes in various weather conditions.... Their effectiveness has been confirmed by both novice gardeners and specialists in this business.

You can plant and grow tomatoes and other vegetables under any conditions. This can be done even when there is a catastrophic lack of space on the personal plot or it is absent altogether. To do this, it is enough just to exactly follow all the instructions and tips.

Few people know how to plant tomatoes according to the method of Galina Kizima? But this technology allows you to solve the problem of insufficient space for growing seeds for seedlings. Galina Kizima has developed many methods of agrotechnical development. She has created a completely new way of growing tomato seedlings in film. As a result, strong plants are obtained, suitable for further planting in open ground.

This method is optimal for those cases when there is a need to prepare a large number of seedlings for the summer season. But the main thing is that this does not require a lot of free space, which is often in short supply.

Opinion about disease

Kizima considers Fitosporin to be the most effective remedy for strawberry diseases.

The most unpleasant strawberry disease that Kizima has encountered is gray rot. At the same time, she recommends making wine from rotten, then trimmed berries (probably, the drink will turn out to be an amateur, the smell alone is worth something).

According to observations, Fitosporin proved to be a particularly effective drug for gray rot. The author recommends processing after the snow has melted, then at the time of setting the berries.

Kizima claims that this drug copes well with white and brown leaf spot. For prophylaxis, it is recommended to treat the beds with "Fitosporin" strawberries leaving before winter.

The gardener is jealous of withered bushes. If this is an accidental, single wilting, then the strawberry bush must be removed, since it can be a carrier of a viral or mycoplasma infection.

In what capacity to sow

Peat, paper and plastic pots, cassettes - now the choice of containers for growing seedlings is quite large. This year I bought cups with an insertable bottom.

It is very convenient: when the seedlings need to be removed from the cup, you just press the bottom on the bottom. The glass is slightly expanded upward, so the lump of soil is easily squeezed out. I always disinfect containers, even new ones, not to mention those that I use not for the first time. Soak them in a strong solution of potassium permanganate for 30 minutes, then rinse with clean water.

The method of planting and growing garden crops "for the reasonably lazy" created by Galina Kizima has been tried and supported by many summer residents.

The method of growing tomato seedlings is sometimes called "Moscow seedlings". It differs from the usual one in that the seeds are sown not in ordinary pots or bowls, but in small cylinders of soil wrapped in a thick plastic film. This gives the plants the moisture they need for germination and sprouting.

Benefits

  • a large number of sprouts are placed on a warm windowsill
  • easy and quick dive: for this the bag unfolds, the seedlings are carefully removed from the ground
  • significant soil savings: only 2.5 kg are needed for 50 plants. land mix
  • plants almost do not suffer from the usual sores of seedlings (black leg)
  • each sprout has a well-developed strong stem
  • seed germination is easy to control through transparent walls.

Disadvantages

  • seedlings grow slowly due to the relative lack of light, they need to be planted a little earlier
  • the root system of plants is relatively weak and requires attention
  • the method is suitable for cold-resistant tomatoes; for thermophilic tomatoes, a dive should be used.

Seedling diapers

For making diapers, an old film from a greenhouse is suitable.

Stick a piece of adhesive plaster on the upper left corner of the diaper (the roll you bought at the pharmacy will last you a lifetime). On it, write the name of the variety or just the number, and in the notebook, write down the name of the variety under this number. Now turn the film over the other side so that the sticker stays in the upper right corner, only on the other side.

Pick technology

Picking seedlings into a diaper from a film with 2-3 true leaves

When the seedlings have 4-5 true leaves, unfold the diapers, add another 1 tbsp under the roots. spoon of soil and wrap again, but without bending the bottom edge. Put on the rubber bands and, holding the soil underneath so that it does not fall out, re-roll the rolls in the container.

Advice from Kizima and Ganichkina

Few people know how sowing tomato seedlings at home is done by Galina Kizima's method. The technology developed by her solves the problem of lack of space for growing seeds for seedlings.

According to her method, tomato seedlings are grown in a film, grows completely healthy and suitable for further cultivation.

Galina Kizima's method

According to her method, the seeds are planted not in boxes and pots, but in a dense plastic wrap (diaper). A small volume of soil is formed in it, which is enough for growing seedlings. As the plants grow, the film retains precious moisture.

The author's method has the following advantages:

  • many tomato seedlings can be placed on the window sill area
  • picking seedlings is easy and does not take much time, because for this you need to unfold the film and take out one plant at a time
  • this method requires a small amount of soil, since 100 tomato seedlings can be grown per 5 kg of substrate
  • in the process of growth, tomato plants are naturally protected from various diseases
  • through the film you can see how tomato seeds germinate.

Like any method, this one also has not only advantages, but also disadvantages. Here are the shortcomings noted by experts:

  • tomato seedlings have little living space
  • high planting density worsens the illumination, as a result of which the development of plants is slowed down.

Brief essence of the method

Planting tomatoes according to the method of Galina Kizima is performed in several ways with variations. Dry seeds and sprouts can be used. Planting seeds can be done in a substrate, or you can do without it.

A description of all methods deserves a separate article, and we will consider one of them, using germinated seeds. Here is the algorithm for the landing:

  • seed preparation is carried out according to traditional technology, with calibration, disinfection and germination
  • then the seeds are placed in a damp cloth
  • a napkin with seeds for 3 days is placed under the bag
  • after this time, the first shoots loops will appear and you can start planting.

Next, you need to correctly carry out the planting process:

  • a certain amount of soil is laid on the corner of the film
  • germinated seeds are placed in it so that the cotyledons are located above the edge of the film, and the roots are covered with soil
  • the film is folded in the center and rolled into a roll
  • so that it does not unwind, it is fixed with an elastic band
  • cooked rolls are placed in a pallet, and it, in turn, is placed in a lighted place
  • the planting date is recorded on the tape.

Oktyabrina Ganichkina's recommendations

Oktyabrina Ganichkina, known throughout the country, gives advice to gardeners on growing tomato seedlings at home.

Sowing seeds at home is carried out depending on the variety. If low-growing varieties are used, then sowing is done in April. After 60 days, the seedlings are ready for planting.

Late-ripening tomatoes are sown in March. Seedlings are ready for planting in 70 days.

Landing rules

Ganichkina advises sowing seeds 3 cm deep in plastic cups, placing one seed in each container. So the plants will not shade each other and the growth of seedlings will not slow down. Covering the sown seeds with a film should be a must.

When growing tomato seedlings, it is very important to maintain a given temperature regime. During the day, the temperature should be +20 degrees and above, and at night it is prohibited to allow it to drop below +15 degrees.

In the video, Oktyabrina Ganichkina gives recommendations on how to sow tomatoes for seedlings at home:

Obligatory care work for tomato seedlings according to Ganichkina

The author believes that in the process of growing seedlings should go through the following stages:

  1. Formation. At the age of 2 months, the first bud is formed on a tomato seedling. It should be removed as it inhibits the development of subsequent flowers.
  2. Top dressing. On the eve of planting seedlings in a garden bed or in a greenhouse, it must be fed with ammonium nitrate without fail. Thanks to this, the seedlings adapt faster to a new place.
  3. Hardening. 7 days before planting, Oktyabrina Ganichkina advises to start hardening the plants. She, in the first 2 days, is taken out into the street for 2-3 hours. Every day, this exposure should be increased, bringing it up to 8 hours a day. Hardened plants do not experience the stress of planting them permanently.

Growing tomato seedlings at home is available to every gardener. To do this, you just need to have minimal knowledge about tomatoes, a little free time and a place on the windowsill.

To get a good result, you need to adhere to the recommendations outlined in this article. Correct and timely fulfillment of all the requirements of the cultivation technology will definitely have a positive effect on the harvest.
