How to use chicken manure correctly without harming plants

How to use chicken manure correctly without harming plants

Poultry manure is an organic substance that contains many beneficial trace elements for fertilizing the beds. However, do not forget about some of the features of its use.

Liquid fertilizer

Chicken manure is never used neat due to its high nitrogen content. It is usually diluted with water. To prepare such a top dressing, you can take buckets, pots or barrels that have already served on the farm.

Wood ash, straw and compost can be added to improve feeding.

The droppings are placed in a container, filled with water in a 1: 1 ratio and mixed slightly. The liquid mixture is infused for a week, then it is diluted with water, one liter of fertilizer per bucket. Excess fertilizer dosage can lead to:

  • to burns of the root part of vegetable and flower crops;
  • excessive growth of green mass.

Before applying liquid chicken droppings, you need to water the beds abundantly. The procedure is convenient to carry out after rain. Make sure that drops do not fall on leaves, stems and roots. If the leaf blades are still splashed, they must be washed with clean water.

Garlic and onions are fed with liquid fertilizer once during the entire growing season. When growing tomatoes and peppers, it is better to apply top dressing before planting seedlings.

The concentrated solution is stored for a long time, it can be consumed throughout the season. Poultry droppings accelerate biological processes in the soil, thanks to which plants receive valuable carbon dioxide.

Dry application

Chicken manure is convenient to use if it has been pre-processed on special equipment. Packages with the finished product are purchased in the store, it is inexpensive. Dry manure is used to feed vegetables, fruit trees and ornamental crops. Benefits of using dried chicken manure:

  • the granules are guaranteed to be free of helminth larvae and weed seeds;
  • they are stored for a long time;
  • are odorless;
  • packs with concentrated dry chicken droppings do not take up much space;
  • the drug can be used in portions, and not all at once.

Granular fertilizer is scattered next to plants in a garden or flower bed, as well as around fruit trees and berry bushes. It is mixed with soil and then watered abundantly. Dry manure consumption is 30-50 g per 1 square meter.

Powder or granules can also be diluted with water in a ratio of 1:25 and insisted for 1-3 days. Then the plants are watered with the resulting solution, being careful not to get on the stem and leaves.

It is not worth increasing the concentration of feeding so that the roots do not suffer.

It is also not necessary to water the plants with a large amount of the mixture, since the fruits will have a high level of nitrate content.

You can make compost from chicken droppings. This fertilizer has improved properties compared to raw material. There are a lot of cooking methods. The easiest way is to put the manure in a box or compost pit on a layer of peat. From above, the entire mass is covered with straw or grass and tamped tightly.

It is necessary to ensure that air penetrates into the middle of the compost heap, but it should not be too loose. If rain gets on the compost, it will not damage the process, as long as the water does not flow inside.

To cover the heap, use a film or roofing material shield. Small holes can be made in it for ventilation. To accelerate ripening, the mass must be slightly stirred. After six months, the compost is ready for use. Its consistency will become loose, and the shade will be uniform. Fertilizer is applied under fruit trees in the garden, used as mulch. The compost layer will protect the plants from freezing. Useful trace elements will gradually enter the soil, saturating garden crops.

Granulated chicken manure contains:

  • nitrogen
  • potassium
  • phosphorus
  • cobalt
  • copper
  • zinc
  • calcium
  • molybdenum
  • iron
  • boron
  • manganese
  • sulfur.

In the instructions for the use of granulated chicken manure, the mark N-P-K must be indicated. These are the proportions of nitrogen with phosphorus and potassium, which must be taken into account when choosing a fertilizer. They can be different - 6: 3: 1 (introduced during the period of active set of vegetative mass or before winter), 5: 4: 3 (during the budding period before the formation of ovaries) and 4: 3: 3 (used during the period of fruit formation) ...

Features of the chemical composition and beneficial properties for plants

Due to the unique chemical composition of chicken manure, such a dressing for cucumbers and tomatoes is similar to certain types of mineral complexes. The value of domestic bird waste lies not only in the presence of a high percentage of nitrogen, which is found in all types of manure, but also in the content of such vital components for agricultural crops as potassium, phosphorus, potassium oxide, phosphoric acid, magnesium, calcium, lime. In addition, chicken manure is distinguished by the presence of copper, manganese, sulfur, zinc, cobalt. An important point is that all the elements that make up this nutrient mixture have an easily digestible form: plants absorb them almost immediately after being introduced into the soil.

When using chicken manure for feeding tomatoes and cucumbers, the following positive changes are observed:

  • plantings are saturated with all the components necessary for full growth and development
  • bushes receive nutrition at all stages of the growing season
  • by improving the structure and composition of the soil, vegetable crops give more yield (almost 40%)
  • due to the restoration of microflora and a decrease in the level of soil acidity, plants become stronger and more resilient
  • the absence of harmful substances in the dressing allows you to get environmentally friendly and safe products for the human body
  • planted plantations are distinguished by an increased level of resistance to adverse environmental factors and various ailments
  • fruit ripening occurs a couple of weeks earlier
  • there is no risk of scalding at the roots.

The applied chicken manure for cucumbers and tomatoes does not cause difficulties in the preparation of a highly effective fertilizer, it can be easily obtained.

Composition of granular fertilizer

To properly assess the benefits of chicken manure in granules, you need to familiarize yourself with its composition. According to the manufacturer's description, 1 kg of fertilizer contains:

  • organic matter - 62%
  • nitrogen - from 1.5% to 5%
  • phosphorus - from 1.8% to 5.5%
  • potassium - from 1.5% to 2%
  • iron - 0.3%
  • calcium - 1%
  • magnesium - 0.3%.

Granulated poultry droppings also contain trace elements that plants need for development and fruiting. In 1 kg of concentrate:

  • manganese - 340 mg
  • sulfur - 40 mg
  • zinc - 22 mg
  • copper - 3.0 mg
  • boron - 4.4 mg
  • cobalt - 3.3 mg
  • molybdenum - 0.06 mg.

The unique composition allows to provide crops with high-quality nutrition during the growing season.

Fertilizer is very effective in its action, the main thing is to know the rules of its use.

Disinfection of flower bulbs with Celandine

Celandine in the country serves as a means of disinfecting flower bulbs. The grass is preliminarily crushed, dried, and put into paper bags. Then in the fall, when the flower bulbs are removed and washed, they must be placed in a dry infusion prepared on the basis of dried bushes. The drug is prepared according to this principle - 150 g of the substance is poured with 10 liters of water, left for 48 hours.

You can also use the product in the spring - before planting flowers. Bulbs of gladioli, lilies, tulips are soaked in a warm infusion based on weed. Then the planting material is set aside to dry completely, and only then it is planted in the soil.

Solution preparation methods

Novice gardeners are concerned about the question of how to breed chicken droppings for feeding plants, and what norms to adhere to.

Granule solution

To prepare a solution from granules, you will need any container, preferably not aluminum. A barrel or bucket will do. The granules are poured into a container and filled with water. The proportion is indicated on the original packaging of the fertilizer, but usually it is 1:25. Infusion lasts at least 50 hours. Better to increase the time to 70 hours.

The prepared solution is poured over the soil around the tree trunk in the amount of 10 liters, and 5 liters under the bushes. Plants are poured under the root. The usual dose is 1 liter. You can simply pour it into the grooves of the garden bed. After feeding, the plants are watered to wash off the splashes of organic matter from the leaves.

The application rate depends on the crop being fed and the composition of the soil. Usually, the solution is watered two or three times per season.

Preparation of manure solution

To prepare a solution from chicken manure, you will similarly need a container with a volume of at least 20 liters. The percentage is similar. You can make a more concentrated solution, and dilute it with water before feeding. Overripe manure from the compost pit is ready to use. Insist it for a couple of hours until it is completely dissolved. Manure stored in bulk in a heap, not rotted. It is insisted longer, until the solution ferments.

Applying fresh chicken manure

Fresh poultry droppings have a fairly high concentration of active substances, which can negatively affect the health of young and stunted plants. It can be detrimental to some crops, so it is recommended to apply it to the soil a couple of months before planting.

If you have your own chicken coop, or one of the neighbors is willing to share fertilizer, it is better to give up fresh chicken droppings and use chicken coop bedding. It usually consists of a mixture of rotted straw and poultry droppings. This type of fertilization allows plants to be fed gradually and for a rather long time, since organic matter gets to the roots along with moisture. It also functions as an organic mulch.

Chicken coop bedding is used as organic mulch

Poultry droppings are used as fertilizer for many vegetable and fruit crops:

  • It can be applied regularly under trees and shrubs, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants.
  • Onions, garlic and various greens need a moderate amount of this top dressing.
  • For blueberries and heather, this can be fatal.

Before diluting chicken manure for plant nutrition, read the table below, it will help determine the timing and dosage of fertilizer for different crops.

Table of norms for the introduction of chicken manure for vegetable crops

Poultry manure is applied to the soil in autumn and spring in the form of compost prepared from it, or using a bedding from a chicken coop. And regular plant nutrition is most often done with diluted granular fertilizer, which you can buy in stores or at theme fairs.

If you are using fresh chicken manure, the solution is prepared in the proportion of 10 liters of water per 0.5 kg. The mixture is infused for two weeks, and its total amount is calculated by the gardener individually. To neutralize an unpleasant odor, add 300 g to the container. iron sulfate. For feeding vegetable crops, the infused fertilizer is diluted with water in a ratio of 1:20. Stir well before watering.

Use for crops

Fruit plants, berries, vegetable crops growing in central Russia respond well to feeding from poultry waste, it is carried out several times per season. The period of flowering, fruit setting and fruiting is very important for the application of fertilizers.

Plants that love acidic soils do not tolerate bird manure feeding. These include heather, cranberries, lingonberries, azaleas, blueberries, and rhododendrons. Tomatoes, peppers, cabbage, potatoes, pumpkin seeds, eggplants and root vegetables are very fond of feeding.

Feeding cucumbers

The first treatment is carried out after the appearance of the first leaves. The second - during flowering, the third - during fruiting. Pour with a solution of infusion. The bed is covered with ready-made compost, which allows you to retain moisture, provides nutrition to the roots and improves the structure of the soil.

During the fruiting period, watering at the root is required. Sub-root spraying is carried out with an infusion of droppings.

Fertilizing strawberries

In the garden bed where strawberries will grow, fertilizer is applied in the fall. Watering is carried out with a solution of fresh manure. For 20 liters of water, add 1 kilogram of fertilizer and water the aisle, trying not to get on the leaves.

Top dressing is done no more than once or twice a year. In the spring, it is allowed to water with a diluted infusion of droppings before flowering at the root of at least one and a half liters of solution.

Feeding roses

Manure should not be applied immediately after planting. The next year after planting, top dressing is applied.

Watering the plant abundantly with clean water, add fertilizing from fresh droppings and water in a ratio of 1:20. The solution should not fall on the plant itself, but only on the aisles.
