Catafillo: definition and meaning

Cataphylls are deeply modified leaves, sessile, with a fleshy or parchmenty consistency, poor or devoid of chlorophyll with a reserve or protective function. Onion cataphylls are typical, where the outermost ones take on a papyrus consistency with a protective function, while the more internal juicy ones take on a function of reserve of nutrients.
They are also called scales or flakes.
