Shears, grates, seeders and other necessary equipment for the lawn
When sowing and caring for a lawn, it is quite possible to do with improvised means without resorting to buying special equipment and equipment, but experienced gardeners know how useful the same grass shears or a special lawn seeder can be. Special techniques and equipment make life much easier for the gardener, helping to make the lawn beautiful without any extra effort.
Choosing lawn scissors
A lawn mower will not be enough for regularly mowing lawn grass
Here's a basic list of everything you need to know when creating and maintaining your lawn:
- seeder for lawn grass;
- roller for leveling the ground and planting seeds;
- fertilizer sprinkler or spreader;
- a lawn mower for regularly cutting grass;
- cordless lawn cutters for easy trimming along curbs and fences;
- plastic nets and grates to protect the lawn from trampling, as well as to strengthen the turf;
- cultivator for loosening the compacted soil in the autumn;
- aerator for saturating the soil with air;
- garden grass shredder for lawn mulching.
To this list, if you wish, you can add other useful modern tools for lawn care, or you can do with the usual shovels, rakes and pitchforks - at your discretion. You can read separate articles on our website about such necessary equipment in the household as a roller for rolling the lawn and a garden shredder. Here we will consider which lawn shears are better to choose, for what purposes you can use various nets, and how to make a seeder with your own hands.

A lawn mower will not be enough for regular mowing of lawn grass, because there are always places on the site that are very difficult to process with a lawn mower: under benches, under bushes, around flower beds, along paths and curbs, along the very edge of the lawn. The best solution would be to purchase special grass shears that can work in a straight and tilted position, carefully cutting off all unnecessary blades of grass.
Manual or mechanical scissors are conventional (the blades simply open and close) and swivel (the blades can rotate at an angle). It is more convenient to use the cordless grass shears, as they work faster, have high flotation and high power. In addition, cordless models are equipped with a lock button to prevent accidental pressing of the start button.
The best solution would be to purchase special scissors for cutting grass.
Before you buy a mechanical lawn shear, please note the following points:
- what is the handle of the scissors made of - the palms quickly get tired of the wooden handles, the most comfortable are the handles with rubber-plastic inserts that do not rub the palms and prevent the scissors from sliding;
- how heavy the model is when held in your hand and is it balanced in the center;
- whether the tool runs smoothly when opening and closing.
With cordless shears, you will need to check the battery power and the number of batteries, as well as how many angles of inclination of the blades are provided - whether you can use the scissors for cutting alpine hills with slopes of different heights.
Keep in mind that straight sharpening of the scissors is more suitable for curly hairstyles, and with the help of wave sharpening, you can trim tough branches with scissors.
Lawn nets and grates
It is easy and quick to install the lawn grate, this task can be dealt with alone
For whatever purpose you create a lawn (solely for decorative purposes or for games and recreation), in any case, plastic lawn mesh can be of invaluable help to you. Firstly, using the mesh even at the stage of laying the lawn will help you to strengthen the sod: the plants will grow through the mesh cells and firmly anchor in the ground, completely closing the mesh from prying eyes.
This is especially true in areas with slopes, where the seeds can be washed out of the soil by rains. Secondly, a fine mesh netting will protect the lawn grass from moles - animals will not be able to access the ground, and they will quickly leave the site. Thirdly, the plastic mesh protects the grass from trampling and the formation of bald spots. Fourthly, insufficiently compacted soil under the mesh does not sag.
It is easy and quick to install the lawn grate, this task can be dealt with alone. The cost of such a device is low - you can lay the mesh even on a large area without spending too much. But at the same time you will be able to cope with several problems at once: soil erosion, soil leaching, trampling of grass and damage to the lawn by rodents.
Do you need a lawn seeder and can you do it yourself?
There is nothing particularly difficult about how to sow a lawn manually, without the use of special tools. However, with a planter, you can significantly speed up the process and achieve more even grass emergence. In addition, the seeder will come in handy more than once for spreading granular fertilizers over the lawn.
Garden equipment video
In stores, seeders are presented in two types: rotary (with circular spread), which scatter the seed around themselves due to the rotation of the disc, and seeders with precise seeding, which pour the seeds in a straight line under them. The first type of seeder is well suited for large areas, while the second type can be used on small lawns.
The rotary seeder, although it allows you to quickly sow the lawn, however, the crops are not as uniform and accurate as in the second type of seeder, but the rotary seeder is convenient to use for spreading fertilizers. And to achieve even planting, you can reduce the seed rate of the rotary seeder and walk up and down the lawn.
A do-it-yourself lawn seeder can be made of an opener with discs from a decommissioned tractor seeder, a disc marker, a disc seed spreader, a seed hopper, a homemade drive wheel welded to the hub of one of the opener discs, and two sprockets with a chain from a road bike. You can take a plastic canister as a seed hopper, make the handles for the seeder from a metal strip, and make the rear packer roller from two plastic wheels from a children's car.
Apricot lel - juicy sweetness of the top of summer
Plant an apricot in your dacha, and this orange miracle of July will more than pay off all the trouble. Apricot Lel became the favorite of summer residents, the description of the variety will confirm that it is the best.
The desire of breeders to ensure that “apple trees will bloom on Mars”, their enthusiasm propel heat-loving plants northward.
In 1986, botanists Aleksey Skvortsov and Larisa Kramarenko presented the Lel apricot to central Russia, in 2004 it was included in the State Register, transferred to the Main Botanical Garden of the country for conservation.
Description of the variety
Before you apricot Lel, a photo of a variety of a young tree with a compact crown, not prone to overgrowing. The tree is low, up to 3 meters, grows slowly, gentle molding is required. The apricot is adorned: in the spring - with a fragrant cloud of flowers, in the summer - with the glow of early fruits on the branches, in the fall - with a red-orange foliage mantle.
The description of the Lel apricot variety characterizes it as very early. The tree is winter-hardy, in the Moscow region it is preserved without shelter. In the spring, during the flowering period, there are no frosts in the Moscow region, so the harvest is harvested annually. The variety is resistant to claterosporium disease; aphids are moderately damaged. A tree for pouring fruits needs potassium, and aphids do not like juice with such a component.
Apricot Lel, description of the variety of the type and taste of the fruit is impossible without excellent epithets. "Small, but daring" - this is about the apricot Lel. Weighing only about 20 g, the fruit conquers with its taste. Not every southern variety will be given 5 points for flavor. And Lel got it.
It is noted to have an orange, tender flesh. The fruit that melts in the mouth is a general admiration. In this case, the stone is rather large, the nucleolus is sweet.
Fruits contain 16% dry matter, the entire range of vitamins and biologically active substances that a person needs.
The fruits are very decorative. They say that if an apricot bears fruit abundantly, then its fruits become smaller, but the taste remains unchanged. Orange apricots have a glossy surface, rounded and slightly flattened on the sides.
It is important to plant the tree correctly and on time, and in the third year to get the first harvest from the seedlings bought in the nursery. Or you can take the bones, sow them in a trench before winter.
But then you can get a non-varietal tree, there is a splitting of signs.
We offer to breed Lel apricots in the Moscow region, because:
- frost resistance of wood 25-300 С
- high self-fertility
- drought tolerance
- small annual growth
- comes into fruiting for 3-4 years:
- annual fruiting.
Self-fertility is a gift of nature to northerners
Few fruit trees have the ability to self-pollinate. It is imperative to have two varieties in order for an ovary to form in an apple tree, a pear tree, and in some varieties of apricots. You can find out whether the Lel apricot is self-fertile or not by looking at the structure of the flower.
If there are stamens with pollen in a flower and an ovule is a pistil, then self-pollination is possible. It is these flowers that are present on the apricot, but not all. Some require cross-pollination. Therefore, the yield will be greater if more than one tree grows on the site.
It is even better if there is a pollinator such as Aquarius.
Self-fertility is one of the methods of procreation. Apricot blooms early, there are no pollinating insects yet, or few. So nature has presented the possibility of self-pollination. By the way, to preserve the species, not all seeds from the batch will sprout in the first spring, they will remain dormant, as a reserve in case of seedling death due to bad weather. They will rise in the years to come.
Agrotechnics of apricot Lel
It depends on the correct choice of place, competent planting and care of apricot Lel whether it will delight you with a harvest and a healthy look for many years.
A gardener is required to fulfill a number of conditions:
- Choose a sunny slope, or create it artificially, pouring a hill of earth with a diameter of 2 m and a height of 70 cm. The flower bed should be gentle, screened from the north wind. In the fall, equip the landing site by digging a hole on top, filling it with light soil with humus and ash.
- Root the seedling in early spring, when the buds have swollen on the neighboring trees, but have not yet blossomed. A seedling with an open root system should look the same. If the plant is in a container, it will take root well a little later. It is better to buy a standard plant in a nursery - the difference is that the scion is made at a height of 1.2-1.5 m.
- At the stage of seedlings, apricots need to be watered 6 times per season, mulch the soil so that the earth does not dry out and does not crack.
- From the first year, the formation of the crown should be carried out. Apricot Lel does not grow quickly, the more accurately you need to form it. Protective measures will help you grow a healthy and effective tree.
It tells about one of the amazing trees bred by Russian breeders. But the apricot has stepped far beyond the Urals, has mastered Khakassia and Eastern Siberia, where in winter the temperature reaches -40 degrees, and return frosts occur in June.

The secret to a beautiful lawn: the aerator makes maintenance easier
A lawn is an integral part of any garden, even in a small summer cottage. The grassy lawns are neat and pleasant to walk on. Ornamental plants look very advantageous against the background of flat greenery. First of all, the lawn requires regular mowing and watering, but this does not mean that you can limit yourself to buying only mowers and sprinklers.
A lawn is an integral part of any garden, even in a small summer cottage.
Lawn grasses have an important feature - they form a dense plexus of roots. This, by the way, allows you to create green lawns in a couple of days - I mean roll lawns. But it is precisely because of this feature that after some time the overgrowth becomes so dense that oxygen, or even water, ceases to flow into the sod during irrigation. As a result, the lawn withers and dies.
For a long time, gardeners have come up with the idea of combing lawns in the spring with a rake and piercing the turf to ventilate the plants. For aeration, you can use a pitchfork or special aerator sandals. But the older the lawn gets, the harder it is to do this, especially if the turf is large.
Aeration can be done with a pitchfork or with aerator sandals
To facilitate maintenance, special machines were created: aerators, scarifiers and scarifiers. They are all designed for the same purpose - airing the lawn, but the methods are slightly different.
The aerator pierces the sod with thorns - this is a kind of comb that collects dead grass and cuts into the ground, leaving small grooves. The verticutter pierces the sod and pulls out thin cylinders of earth, so that the holes are deeper in this case. The scarifier cuts the turf with curved knives.
The lawn needs help
Brushing the lawn should be done at least 2 times a year, it is very useful to do this also before the scheduled fertilization. Scarification is a kind of surgical procedure in which the roots of the grass are incised. This stimulates its growth, the density becomes uniform. Often it is impossible to cut the turf, optimally 2 times a year - in spring and early autumn, so that the plants have time to recover.
For complex lawn care, a technique has appeared on sale that combines 2 functions: aeration and scarification. For example, in the AL-KO product line there are 2 combi devices Combi Care 38 E Comfort: in electric and petrol version.
Electric aerator AL-KO Combi Care 38 E Comfort in use
The set includes two shafts: one for combing out, the other for scarification. Their replacement is not difficult and is done without the use of tools. The aerators are equipped with spacious collectors, so you don't have to collect manually cleaned grass.
In the next video, you can see in more detail what the AL-KO Combi Care 38 E Comfort electric aerator is, how one shaft is replaced with another, and how to prepare the lawn for summer fertilization and properly lay it.
The OBI garden catalog "Book of recipes for country life" contains all the best for the garden and summer cottages, including a huge selection of lawn care equipment at low prices. How to make a lawn?
Let's stop at the garden and park lawn. It is believed that in our climate the optimal ratio of open and closed space is 2: 1. Open space is the part of the plot that is planted below eye level, and this part, of course, includes the lawn.
Estimate the ratio of open to closed space, including lawn area
You have to figure out how much area to take for it, estimate the illumination of the place. It is desirable that the lawn be of the same type - either sunny or partial shade.
Choosing seeds for your lawn
The first thing to do is soil analysis - then you will know what and how much you need to add to it so that your lawn grows well. And only then should you choose the seeds.
To confidently judge that the herbs of this mixture are suitable for your conditions, I recommend that you read a thorough book, for example, "All About the Lawn" by Dr. Hession, which you will need in the future.
The selection of lawn seeds is an important and responsible task
Before you buy seeds, find out when they were grown (the package should be stamped with the date). There should be no more than two years between the time of growing seeds and planting them! For sowing, you need to buy 6 kg of seeds per hundred square meters: 5 kg for sowing and 1 kg for repairing the lawn next year. Do not open the bag out of curiosity before boarding, as seed germination depends on moisture, which, in turn, depends on the tightness of the package.
A wide range of lawn grasses and mixtures are presented in our catalog, which brings together the offers of reliable garden online stores. View a selection and choose a lawn mixture.
Preparing a plot for the lawn
You bought the seeds. Next, you need to prepare a site for planting a lawn. There are three things to watch out for:
- Ground water
At the site of the future lawn, all debris must be carefully removed.
We removed all the debris, made the necessary additives (see soil analysis) - now we dig it with a shovel (best of all) 1 bayonet deep. During digging, we select the remaining garbage, stones, glass, weeds with roots.
- Plot slope
Under the lawn you need a slope of the site from the house
Simultaneously with the planning, we break the clods (we ensure that the remaining clods are no larger than corn grain).
We sow the lawn
We leveled the site, prepared the soil, now it must be compacted either with the reverse side of the rake (if the site is small), or with a roller weighing 100 kg. Then they watered and left for 3-4 weeks. All this time, periodically watering the ground, we correct irregularities (pour a mixture of earth and sand into the holes), weed out the emerging weeds and we select a lawn planting time that satisfies three conditions:
- the day should be calm
- it shouldn't rain
- the ground should be moist on the inside, and weathered on top so that it does not stick to the feet and the roller.
It is best to prepare the area for the lawn in the fall, and sow in the spring. It is undesirable to plant a lawn later on August 20-25, since in autumn the grass grows 3-4 times slower.
The area for the lawn must be prepared very carefully, ideally from the fall.
We chose a landing day. what by this day you must have:
- sifted garden soil.
Consider in advance in which direction you will sow. Mix the seeds thoroughly in the bag (and do this periodically), pour into the seeder (the seeder must be adjusted beforehand), sow a strip slightly wider than the roller width. In a small area, the lawn can be sown by hand with the “sowing motion”.
In a small area, you can sow by hand, in a large area it is better to use a seeder
Lightly cover the sown strip with the prepared soil in a layer of approximately 1.5-1 cm and roll it in with a roller. Approximately a meter of lawn along the paths and the blind area should be sown twice as thick: firstly, these places are trampled down the most, and snow is thrown here in winter.
Cover the sown area with lutrasil and pin it. Apply lutrasil with an overlap and secure with pins every 1-1.5 m. Less often it is bad - the wind will raise the shelter. What is it for? Firstly, so that the birds do not peck the seeds, and secondly, so that heavy rain does not knock out or wash them out - after all, it is very important that they are evenly distributed over the surface, and thirdly, so that pets cannot harm the future lawn. After everything is closed, pour water on top through sprayers. Do not water the lawn with chlorinated water!
Water the crops depending on the weather and soil: if it is hot, then every day if the soil is sandy - 2 times a day. Watering should be done either before 10 o'clock in the morning, or after 18 o'clock, it is better not to do this during the day - more harm than good. Well-watered soil will be moist to a depth of 8-10 cm, place the jar where you are watering - it should collect about 10 cm of water. Watering must be uniform.
The most dangerous time for a lawn is the fifth or seventh day after planting, when the first shoots appear: the seeds were dry, they were watered - they absorbed moisture, swelled, and if there is no watering at this time, they dried up! When you see friendly shoots, the lutrasil can be carefully removed.
If everything is done correctly, in 5-7 days after sowing you will see friendly shoots
Mowing the lawn is a must. The market offers mechanical, electric, gasoline lawn mowers and trimmers. However, on the site there are places that are difficult to access for such mechanisms. In addition to the horizontal trimming of the grass, a vertical one is also required to level the edges and edges of the lawn. These procedures require lawn scissorswhich are divided into two main groups:
Lawn shears are usually divided into:
- mechanical scissors (manual)
- battery-powered lawn scissors.
Mechanical lawn shears (manual) are available in conventional and rotary versions. The principle of operation does not differ from household ones. When choosing a tool, you should pay attention to the following points:
- material for making pens. Fixtures with plastic handles outperform wooden ones. They do not rub their palms and do not slip
- smooth running of blades
ON THE PICTURE: The lawn cutter is great for tackling grass near fences and curbs.
Electric lawn cutters are much more expensive. At the same time, they are much more convenient to operate. They are usually equipped with a telescopic handle that allows you to work while standing. We strongly recommend that you choose devices with a lithium-ion battery, the capacity is higher and the charging speed is faster.
To avoid overheating of the electric motor, it is recommended to take breaks after 30 minutes. work.
Many manufacturers produce models that exclude jamming of knives and sticking of grass. And Gardena lawn scissors are equipped with additional attachments for cutting shrubs and hedges.
ON THE PICTURE: The Gardena cordless lawn cutter has a convenient telescopic handle.
ON THE PICTURE: The special attachment allows the tool to be used as a hedge trimmer.
It's so hard! Is there an alternative?
I will say a few words about the roll lawn. For him, the preparation of the soil is the same as for the garden and park lawn. Plus - the fact that it spreads by specialists in a matter of days; minus - it doesn’t take root well (a complex nursing system that depends on many conditions), it winters poorly (like a garden lawn).
The roll lawn has its pluses, but there are enough minuses.
The lawn is the most difficult element of garden design, you could see this by your own example and by reading what is written above. Now it is pertinent to ask the question, is there any alternative? Yes there is!
Natural lawn - this is what grows in the garden by itself, is cut every week from year to year, winters well. And if you take care of it, you will get a green, problem-free carpet. This is exactly the kind of lawn on my site.
First there was a dandelion field. They began to mow every week, and the composition of the grass began to change - the weeds that did not like weekly mowing disappeared, and the grasses grew. The dandelions did not completely disappear, so the remaining ones had to be dug up.
After analyzing the soil, liming was carried out before winter. The biggest work was to level the surface - where there were small irregularities, they covered them with earth mixed with sand. Where there were large irregularities, we cut the sod into squares, pulled it out, put it in the shade, leveled the ground and put the sod back in place. Then they tamped it down and watered it properly. The same should be done if you have a reverse slope (remember, the slope of the lawn should be from home!).
You can also create a bright and unusual flowering lawn (it is also sometimes called Moorish). You can choose flower mixtures for such a lawn for every taste in our catalog, where the products of various garden online stores are presented. View a selection of lawn flower mixtures.
After two weeks, the lawn must be fed (and before that it must be watered). With regard to haircuts, follow the same rule - cut only 1/3 of the height. Regarding watering and feeding, there are no such strict rules as for a garden and park lawn: focus on the weather conditions, your desire and the condition of the lawn.
Before winter, the natural lawn must be mowed, watered and all leaves and debris collected so that it leaves clean in winter. In the spring you need to comb it out, feed it, roll it in, if the ground is very swollen, and then ... However, you already know what to do.

How to choose a roll lawn
The first step is not to confuse meadow turf and lawn - the latter is grown from special nurseries, while the first is cut from a regular meadow.
When choosing rolled sod, pay attention to the characteristics of the sod layer - it must be the same with the natural environment in your area, otherwise the lawn will not be able to take root.
Vegetation should not show signs of any diseases and contain any pests - attentiveness and only attentiveness, no trust in the word! Examine the root system - there should be no damage, it should not be too dry. A high-quality grass carpet is uniform and dense, its color is rich. No yellowish spots of grass are acceptable. There should not be a significant number of weeds among the noble grass. The mowing of the rolled lawn should be fresh, the roots in the turf are tightly intertwined with the earthy layer, with a high content of young (white) roots. Shake the roll lightly by the edge - it should not break.
The average price for a rolled lawn: parterre - 100 rubles / m2, park - 90 rubles / m2, meadow - 80 rubles / m2.
