How to build a gazebo with your own hands

How to build a gazebo with your own hands

Sooner or later, as a rule, after the completion of the main construction work on a suburban area, it is the turn of the gazebo arrangement. This is a simple structure, but its construction must be taken seriously for it to be truly useful and enjoyable to use.

How to build a gazebo with a pitched roof with your own hands

Gazebo is a telling name. It can be positioned as a place for sincere, leisurely communication after a hard day with both family members and guests living in a country house. However, the functionality of this structure is gradually expanding. Most often, the gazebo is used for the following purposes:

  1. Cooking food for family and guests. For this, a wood-burning, gas or electric stove is installed in the gazebo. The convenience of such a division of functions is that there will be no food odors in a residential building and a comfortable temperature will remain in the hot season. In this case, it is advisable to equip the gazebo with a refrigerator.
  2. Favorite pastime - cooking kebabs or grilled meat. To do this, you need to arrange a brazier or a wood-burning hearth here.

To organize a good rest in the gazebo, they usually install:

  • kitchen cabinet or shelves, equipped with everything you need to cook and eat. They are needed in order not to constantly go into the house for kitchen utensils and dishes;
  • water intake point, which is part of the seasonal water supply;
  • the necessary set of comfortable furniture. Considering the possibility of receiving guests, it is advisable to have a folding furniture.

Thus, this building in the warm season turns into a leisure center in a suburban area. Its size is determined based on the maximum number of guests and permanent residents.

A properly built and equipped gazebo often becomes the most popular place on a suburban area

A wide, up to two meters, blind area is arranged around the gazebo. Flower beds and flower beds around the gazebo look very good. A particularly successful solution is the use of climbing plants on the pergolas, creating a separate recreation area and protecting it from wind and drafts.

Which roof to choose for the gazebo

The simplest solution for the gazebo roof is a shed structure. The technology of its manufacture is the most accessible for doing it yourself, even with little experience in performing carpentry work. The slope of such a roof is usually made small - up to 15 degrees. In this case, it is imperative to take into account possible snow loads in the construction region. Wind loads, given the small angle of inclination, do not have a decisive effect on the roof and the entire structure of the gazebo.

In a gazebo with a pitched roof, the withdrawal of the stove chimney is easiest to make

The advantages of pitched roofs include:

  1. Saving material in the manufacture of trusses in comparison with gable roofs.
  2. A simplified design available for do-it-yourself manufacturing.
  3. Low weight of the roof, which allows you to reduce the size of the foundation and reduce the cost of its manufacture.
  4. Maintainability. With small slope angles of the pitched roof, it is easy to move along it for repair and maintenance.
  5. The possibility of using a wide range of roofing coatings.

Of the shortcomings, the following points are noted:

  1. Increased snow loads due to extreme weather conditions. The level of snow on a pitched roof must be constantly monitored and, if necessary, cleaned. When calculating the overlap of the gazebo, an accurate selection of the permissible cross-section of the beams with a safety margin of at least 20-25% is required.
  2. When installing a gazebo on the site, it is necessary to take into account the prevailing direction of the winds in the construction region, orienting it with a slope against the wind.

When planning to install a shed roof on a gazebo, it should be noted that it will be difficult to give it a beautiful appearance. It is necessary to pay special attention to the design and color schemes of the entire building as a whole.

The disadvantages of the appearance of a gazebo with a pitched roof can be leveled by a good choice of design and quality of finishing materials

In some cases, gazebos are covered with gable and even hipped roofs, but they require significantly higher costs and high construction qualifications of the performers.

Roofing materials for gazebos

A variety of materials can be used as a roof covering for a gazebo, ranging from a self-leveling roof to sheet metal or plastic products. The peculiarity of such a structure is that a roofing cake is not formed on it, but the coating is mounted directly on the rafter beams.

It is a common practice when the remainder of the topcoat from other buildings erected earlier is used to overlap the gazebo. These can be materials such as:

  1. Standard slate. The material has a nondescript appearance even when painted. In addition, it is heavy and requires reinforcement of the frame structure and the rafter system of the gazebo. The use of slate can be justified only if other buildings on the site are covered by it. In this case, the cost of building a gazebo is reduced due to the use of leftovers. And the execution of several buildings in the same style, of course, will give the entire site a kind of charm. Alternatively, you can use transparent plastic slate.... It is much lighter, easy to use, strong enough, but it costs much more. A gazebo with such a finish will look light and airy, but its cost will increase.

A standard slate is not the best roof option for a gazebo

  2. Metal tile or corrugated board. Metal sheet profiles are very easy to use, have a low dead weight, therefore they do not have a decisive influence on the structure of the frame and truss trusses. Visually, such a coating looks good only if there are roofs of the same material nearby. The disadvantages include strong heating of the roof under the sun's rays during the hot season. However, it is eliminated by additional filing of the wooden ceiling under the metal profile.

If a roof is made of corrugated board on the gazebo, it is better to hem the ceiling with boards to compensate for possible heating of the metal

  3. The tile is ceramic. This material is used extremely rarely for gazebos and only if it is available in abundance for the manufacture of a roof in full. The reason for this is the significant weight of the material, which requires serious reinforcement of the structure of the building, and its high price.
  4. Ondulin. This is a modern material that, unlike shingles, does not require special structures of the rafter system, since it weighs very little. In addition, it is easy to process, so it is well suited for complex roofs.

Ondulin can be laid on any roof structure, because it is easy to process and weighs little

Sometimes various types of soft roofing materials are used for the finishing of gazebos. However, given their properties and application technology, it is necessary to arrange a dense continuous crate under them, for which materials such as waterproof plywood, OSB sheets, cement particle board and others are used. For the top coat you can use:

  1. Bituminous mastic for self-leveling roofing. In this case, it is necessary to install a protective layer of fine gravel or paint the finished roof surface with silver paint.
  2. Roll roofing materials that are applied to the surface by gluing with mastic or using gas burners.
  3. Small-format shingles. It is suitable for the construction of roofs with complex shapes, is easy to process and easy to install.

Soft tiles for the roof of the gazebo reliably protect it from rain and have a presentable appearance

It is worth noting that the construction of a roof made of soft roofing coverings is a rather time-consuming task, therefore, when building such simple structures as gazebos, they are rarely used.

Polycarbonate as a top covering for the gazebo roof

In recent years, polycarbonate - honeycomb or monolithic - has become more and more popular for lightweight roofs. This material is made from polymerized phenols and carbonic acid. It is environmentally friendly and, due to its characteristics, is widely used in construction to create translucent structures. Main characteristics of polycarbonate sheet:

  1. Cellular polycarbonate is produced according to a single standard - 3,000, 6,000 and 12,000 mm with a width of 2,100 mm. The sheet thickness can be from 3 to 40 mm. Monolithic polycarbonate is produced in the size of 3050x2050 mm with a thickness of 1–12 mm.
  2. Internal stiffening ribs of cellular polycarbonate can be straight or X-shaped, and cavities - two- or three-chambered. The larger the number of chambers, the higher the strength characteristics of the coating.
  3. Monolithic polycarbonate is used in high-strength facilities to replace glass. Its strength allows the material to be used in bulletproof screens.
  4. The specific gravity of polycarbonate is 1.2 g / cm3 - 1m2 this material with a thickness of 4 mm weighs only 0.65 kg.

Air cavities inside a sheet of cellular polycarbonate increase its heat-insulating properties, and vertical and inclined partitions significantly increase its strength

Polycarbonate panels, due to their high strength characteristics (and it is 100 times stronger than silicate glass), are widely used for safe translucent structures. Sheets 6 mm thick can easily withstand the effects of hail.If the partition made of this material can still be destroyed, then its fragments are not traumatic.

Polycarbonate is non-flammable and does not support combustion. At temperatures over 600 oC it simply evaporates to form water vapor.

Due to the described properties, polycarbonate is the best material for the construction of awnings and arbor roofs.

For the construction of a beautiful and durable gazebo roof, it is better to use monolithic polycarbonate

Drawings for the manufacture of a gazebo

It is quite simple to carry out a polycarbonate roof project on your own. The main thing that needs to be calculated thoroughly is the load on the roof, which are usually taken into account with a margin of 20-25%. In most cases, a beam with a section of 50x150 mm is used as floor beams. For even distribution of loads with long rafters, struts must be used.

If the width of the gazebo is more than 4.5 m, then the rafter joists must be reinforced with struts (rafter legs)

The dimensions of the gazebo are usually selected based on the available free space and the need to use additional equipment in the form of ovens or barbecues.

The construction of the gazebo must begin with the development of a draft design, which displays its shape, dimensions and characteristics of the materials used

The frame of the gazebo must also be reinforced with additional details that increase its strength. These details should also be shown in the drawings.

Additional stops reinforce the structure of the arbor frame

The basic rule when assembling the frame is that each part is installed in a cut-in on the mating product, which ensures the axial direction of the load.

In the design and construction of gazebos, developers often use one remarkable property of polycarbonate - its ability to bend. The material is easily deformed, with a minimum bend radius of 150 sheet thicknesses. Therefore, shed roofs made of polycarbonate often take the form of arches. The plasticity of polycarbonate increases when heated, which makes it possible to give the structure an original appearance.

Arbor installation sequence

The installation of the gazebo consists of several stages, each of which we will consider in detail.

Foundation device

A feature of the gazebo is its low weight with a fairly high windage. This determines the need for a reliable foundation and strong fastening of the connecting element - the grillage - with the foundation and the topside. And if the base of the gazebo is made in the form of a stone parapet, then the structure of the foundation must be expected to support a significant weight of the structure.

For the foundation it is necessary:

  1. Choose a place for the permanent location of the gazebo, mark it with pegs. Pull the cord between them. After installing the pegs, the main control operation is checking the diagonals. If they are equal, then the markup is correct.
  2. Remove vegetation from the gazebo area, including grass, bushes and trees.
  3. In the corners, open pits up to a meter deep. To do this, it is convenient to use a garden drill with a diameter of 25 centimeters. Depending on the size of the future structure, the distance between the posts should be 1.2–1.5 meters. Pits also need to be opened at the intersection points of the foundation lines.

Wells for the foundation are easiest to make with an ordinary garden drill.

  4. Arrange gravel cushions using a 10 cm layer of gravel and 20 cm sand. The cushions in each pit are tamped down and spilled with water to compact.
  5. For each post, make a reinforcing mesh of three or four rods of 8-10 mm in size and place it in the pit.
  6. Above each pit, install a formwork made of planks, plywood sheets or other materials available. All of them are adjusted in height to the same level.

Formwork for pouring concrete into a well can be made from a sheet of roofing material rolled into a pipe

  7. Fill with concrete of grade 300. The support base will be ready for further production in seven days, although complete hardening of the concrete occurs within 28 days.

In order not to bother with pouring concrete, ready-made foundation blocks can be used as supports, partially burying them on a sand and gravel pad and leveling the upper ends in a horizontal plane. A wooden or metal grillage is installed on top of the pillars.

Instead of a columnar foundation, a strip foundation can be made, and when placing a gazebo on a slope, a foundation on screw piles. This is the most labor-saving method, eliminating excavation work.

After installing the grillage, you can start building the frame of the gazebo.

How to mount the frame of the gazebo

The work is performed one by one in the following sequence:

  1. The lower harness of the gazebo frame is being mounted. For it, you need to use a planed bar with a size of at least 100x150 mm. The timber is connected at the corners with a cut-in. Splice lengthwise is allowed if necessary.
  2. Pillars are installed in the corners, which are attached to the base. The minimum size of a bar for posts is 100x100 mm. For temporary fixation, you can use the jibs between them and the lower harness. At the base, you need to install two corner plates and additionally strengthen each post with two forged brackets.

Vertical posts are fixed with corner plates and additionally reinforced with temporary braces

  3. The upper strapping is installed from a bar with a section of 100x100 mm.
  4. The fastening of horizontal partitions is made, which will separate the lower contour of the walls from the upper open space. They are made from a board measuring 50x100 mm. They need to be docked with a tie-in in vertical pillars or rest on overlays stuffed from below.

Horizontal partitions cut into vertical pillars or rest on overlays stuffed underneath

  5. After that, you can put intermediate pillars around the perimeter, if required by the size of the building.

Manufacturing and installation of roof trusses

The gazebo roof trusses are best assembled on the ground using a specially equipped slipway.

  1. The slipway consists of three horizontal supports located in the same plane and located at the joints of the main parts.
  2. The details of the truss truss are placed on the slipway, cut-outs are made at the joints and fixed with temporary fasteners. After that, a thorough check is made to ensure that the truss matches the drawing. If everything fits together, the details of the truss are finally fixed.
  3. The details of the next truss are laid out on top of the first, fixed with clamps strictly along the contours of the lower structure, which plays the role of a conductor. After the second truss is made, it is removed to the side. The rest of the trusses are assembled in the same way.

If all trusses are assembled according to the same template, they will have almost the same dimensions.

When erecting a gazebo, the rafter system can be mounted at the top. In this case, the required roof slope is formed at the stage of installing the upper trim, which is installed at different heights. The rafters are attached to the strapping bar with metal corner plates on both sides and reinforced with struts.

Features of installation of roofing materials

As we have already said, coverings of tiles, slate and soft roofing materials are rarely used in the construction of a gazebo.... Mostly used is ondulin, profiled sheet or polycarbonate.

  1. When installing an ondulin or a profiled sheet on the rafters, a sparse crate is stuffed with a step of not more than 300 mm (taking into account the slope of the slope, which usually does not exceed 15o). For the lathing, an edged board with a thickness of 25 or 33 mm is used.

During the construction of the gazebo, the sheathing is laid immediately on the rafters, the roofing cake is not mounted

  2. The decision to install a polycarbonate roofing assumes that the sheathing will not be used. Therefore, a sheet of appropriate length is selected, equal to the length of the span from the ridge to the end of the overhang. For a gazebo, the size of the overhang should be about 40 centimeters to protect against slanting rains. Considering that the width of the sheet is 2.05 m, the pitch between the rafters should be 1,025 or 683 mm. In this case, the joint between the sheets will always fall on the edge of the rafter leg, which will ensure reliable fastening. Depending on the size of the overhang, the distance between the extreme trusses can be reduced.

Polycarbonate on the roof of the gazebo is most often placed without crate, right along the rafters

To cover the roof, you need to use cellular or monolithic polycarbonate with a thickness of 6 to 10 mm. This size allows the roof to be guaranteed to withstand blows from hail and even large branches brought by the wind. The upper end of the cellular polycarbonate must be closed with a special seal so that water does not collect in the voids. It promotes the formation of moss or mold in the channels, which leads to a rapid loss of transparency in the material.

Lengthwise joining of polycarbonate sheets is made using special silicone joining profiles.

Silicone profiles allow you to reliably seal all joints on the polycarbonate roof

The polycarbonate is fastened with self-tapping screws using special shock-absorbing washers, which are sold with the base material. It should be noted that polycarbonate expands when heated, and this can cause it to swell. Therefore, when drilling holes for fasteners, the drill diameter must be selected 2 millimeters larger than the nominal screw size. This will avoid thermal stress in the material after installation. The step of fixing polycarbonate sheets should not be more than 40 centimeters.

The color of the polycarbonate should be in harmony with the tone of the materials used to build the gazebo. The intensity of the luminous flux color can vary from 15% to the complete opacity of the material. For the roof of the veranda, a material with a light transmission capacity of the order of 20-25% is used.

Schemes and sequence of installation of the roof covering of the gazebo

Installation of ondulin or corrugated board is carried out by attaching sheets to the crate. For this, special roofing screws or nails with a rubber washer are used, which reliably closes the holes in the roofing material from leaks. The material is laid in the following sequence:

  1. Sheets of corrugated board begin to mount from the edge of the slope, gradually moving along the eaves. If the coating is laid in several rows, then first two sheets of the lower row are fixed, then one of the upper ones. After that, the sheets are stacked one by one. The vertical overlap should be 200 mm, and the horizontal overlap should be one wave.

At the junction, self-tapping screws are screwed into each wave, in the rest of the sheet - after two waves

  2. Ondulin is mounted in rows, starting from the eaves slope, with an offset of half the sheet. Vertical overlap - 170-200 mm, horizontal - one wave. You need to drive 20 nails into each sheet.

Ondulin is mounted with an offset between the rows to avoid the appearance of joints of four sheets

The installation of polycarbonate is done in a different way, since the roof under it does not contain a crate. Work must be carried out in calm, windless weather by at least three people.

Sheets of material are delivered to the installation site. In this case, you do not need to remove the protective film from the front side.

  1. Two workers feed the sheet up, the third drags it in and places it at the installation site, taking into account the previously calculated overhang. Before feeding from the edge of the sheet, you need to remove the protective film with a strip.
  2. A roof ladder is raised to the roof and placed on top of the first sheet. During installation, the top can only be moved along it.
  3. The second sheet is fed in the same order. The edge of the sheet is freed from the protective film for the connection device using the connecting profile. The sheets are docked together.

Polycarbonate sheets can be joined with an overlap or using a special profile, and the second method is much more reliable

  4. The rest of the sheets are fed and installed in the same way. Remains of the protective film are removed from the entire surface.
  5. Holes are drilled in the coating sheets and the mount is installed using special thermal washers. The pitch of the screws should be about 40 cm. In order for the rows of fasteners to be even, it is better to install them along the cord or using a template to control the pitch. It is necessary to pay attention to the strict perpendicularity of the installation of the screws, especially if cellular polycarbonate is used. Otherwise, a break occurs in the thin wall of the material, and it fails. If the screw accidentally entered with a bias, you need to unscrew it, close the hole in the rafter with a wooden plug and reinstall the screw.

Fastening of polycarbonate must be done strictly perpendicularly, without overtightening the mount, so as not to deform the coating

  6. At the end of the strengthening of the covering, an end profile is installed on the edges of the roof made of cellular polycarbonate so that moisture does not enter the internal cavities.

The device of the gazebo is a certain stage in the development of a suburban area. This structure doesn't seem like a must, but it's a lot of fun to use it. In addition, for construction, you can use the remnants of materials that have probably accumulated during the construction of the house and outbuildings. They need to be creative and used as efficiently as possible. Good luck to you!

DIY wooden gazebo with a pitched roof

On the Internet, in magazines and books, you can find many diagrams and drawings of gazebos of various shapes and sizes. Someone prefers modern brick or metal structures with a barbecue and barbecue, but most people choose a more budgetary option - building a wooden gazebo. It can be in the shape of a polyhedron, but a square or rectangular design is much cheaper.

In this material, we will give detailed step-by-step instructions on how to make a completely beautiful gazebo made of wood with a lean-to roof with your own hands.

Shed gazebo from a bar

For giving

If wooden buildings can become unusable for several seasons, then gazebos built from the latest materials have a significantly longer service life.

Everyone dreams of creating a vacation spot that can please all visitors for years. The need for a gazebo made of polycarbonate and metal in suburban conditions is often underestimated.

This design has several advantages:

  1. The metal frame allows to reduce the weight of the building. Due to the lightness of polycarbonate, the gazebo does not require a foundation as a base, and, if necessary, can be easily dismantled and rearranged.
  2. Minimal structural complexity. Typical buildings are erected without deadlock situations. If desired and the necessary tools are available, the process of making the frame and its further sheathing is within the power of any owner.
  3. Availability and low cost of raw materials. All components of the building do not have an exorbitant value, and it is possible to purchase funds in the nearest construction center.
  4. The material is easy to use in a variety of finishes.

The recreation structure decorated with polycarbonate panels contributes to the visual expansion of the space of the site.

The use of the yellowish tint of this material as an overlap creates the illusion of natural light, even on gloomy days.

On a note: high thermal conductivity is considered a positive property of technological plastic.

The presence of an air gap in its porous structure, combined with minimal heating, makes it quite comfortable to stay inside the gazebo.

Wooden gazebo with your own hands. Photos and drawings of structures

When choosing material for the construction of a gazebo, many people prefer wood. Wooden models fit perfectly into the exterior of the local area and look harmonious in the garden. In addition, wood is a fairly strong, environmentally friendly and durable material that can be easily processed. As a rule, wooden arbors are made in an open version. For the construction, a bar, logs, a board, a lattice of planks and other wooden elements are used.

Diy rectangular gazebo made of wood

The simplest option for self-design and construction is a square or rectangular gazebo. It is a lightweight open structure consisting of support posts, roof and railings. The drawings show the dimensions of the structure, the height of the support posts, the configuration of the roof, indicating the height and angles of inclination, the height and drawing of the fence.

Drawings of the frontal and profile projection of the gazebo are being carried out. A separate diagram shows the foundation for the structure (usually a columnar base is used). This indicates the depth of the pillars and the distance between them, which depends on the size of the gazebo.

Project of a rectangular wooden gazebo with a fence and a staircase

Helpful advice! For the convenience of the work, it is necessary to attach to the project detailed diagrams of technical units, which will indicate the options for fastening the elements to each other.

In the drawings of the roof, it is necessary to display the rafter system indicating the method of fastening the upper strapping, the lower support for the rafters (Mauerlat), and also set the step between the rafters.

When all the drawings and diagrams are ready, you can start building the structure yourself. First of all, they prepare and mark the site for construction. For this, pegs with a construction cord are used. After the perimeter is fixed, they begin to build the foundation.

Drawing with dimensions of a square gazebo made of wood

To complete the foundation, according to the drawings, holes are dug about 70-80 cm deep, the bottom is filled with a layer of sand, and then the support posts are inserted and concreted. When performing work, it is imperative to check the verticality of all supports and their equidistance from each other along the entire height.

Then they proceed to the implementation of the lower strapping and the device of the floor from the log. For this, wooden beams are used. When the floor frame is assembled, plank flooring is arranged. Next, the upper harness is attached, the roof frame is assembled using the prepared schemes, the frame is sheathed with a board and covered with roofing material.

Step-by-step scheme for the construction of a wooden gazebo

Installation of the fence is carried out when the structure of the gazebo is fully assembled and installed. First, the horizontal beams are fixed, serving as railings, and then the vertical supports (balusters) of the fence are fixed. If the project provides for a wooden lattice as a fence, then frames are prepared from a bar according to the specified dimensions, inside which the strips are stuffed in the form of a grid.

Projects of gazebos made of wood with barbecue, barbecue

Before proceeding with the development of the project of the gazebo itself with a barbecue or fireplace, it is necessary to complete a sketch, which will indicate the location of the gazebo on the site. Due to the fact that water and gas are often supplied to such structures, it is necessary to correctly plan its installation site. In addition, the direction of the wind should be taken into account, in which the smoke from the stove would not spread to other buildings.

Spacious wooden gazebo equipped with a barbecue oven

Wooden gazebos with a barbecue, stove or fireplace usually replace summer kitchens in terms of functionality. Such structures can be erected both open and closed.Variants of closed buildings are often used in winter, therefore, at the design stage, wall insulation and the availability of high-quality ventilation can be provided.

Designing gazebos with a barbecue, barbecue or fireplace is a rather complicated process. For such structures, it is important to take into account not only the foundation for the pavilion itself, but also directly for the furnace equipment, since the brick structure has a fairly large weight. Most often, a separate tiled foundation is arranged under a brazier or fireplace, and for the gazebo itself - a columnar or ribbon foundation.

A sketch of a gazebo made of brick and wood with a barbecue and a stove

Helpful advice! To avoid the appearance of cracks in the concrete base under the brazier or fireplace, it is necessary to apply the reinforcement of the foundation with steel rods.

The drawings show all the dimensions of the gazebo, the layout with the designation of the location of the barbecue or fireplace. The diagram of the foundation and the chimney is shown separately. The project also includes drawings of the barbecue itself, indicating the shape and dimensions of the brazier, the number of firing points and the orderly laying of bricks during construction.

3D project for the construction of a wooden gazebo with a wood-burning stove

When developing the plan of the gazebo, it is required to make the correct zoning of the space. It is necessary to provide for a safe location of the dining table and provide free access to the brazier or fireplace for preventive and maintenance activities. It is also extremely important to indicate the dimensions of the floor area around the furnace equipment where the fireproof material will be laid.

The use of gazebos with a barbecue and a stove as a summer kitchen involves connecting water, gas and electricity networks to them. In this regard, the project includes wiring diagrams indicating the location of electric points, as well as wiring diagrams for gas and water networks.

Competently executed projects of wooden gazebos with fireplaces, stoves or barbecues will avoid mistakes in the rather complicated construction of such structures.

Features of the use of various roofing materials

From the photo of houses with a pitched roof, you can clearly see that a wide variety of types of roofing materials can be used for such a structure. When choosing the best option, certain criteria must be taken into account.

Installation drawing of a pitched roof covered with shingles

Building type... Roof requirements largely depend on the intended purpose of the building. Between a residential building, a bathhouse or a garage, there are significant differences in design features that must be taken into account when designing a roof. For example, for residential premises, you need to equip a durable, reliable and attractive roof, and outbuildings can be covered with cheap material without any special aesthetic delights.

Service life of building material... Of course, the durability of the roof in most cases depends on the quality of its installation, but the selected roofing material also matters. When choosing, it should be borne in mind that the average service life, for example, of natural tiles is 100 years, and flexible - 20-40. If you plan to make do-it-yourself logs with a pitched roof, then you can use ondulin, the durability of which ranges from 15 to 25 years.

Roof shape... If you plan to make an ordinary straight slope, then any type of material can be used for these purposes. For projects with pitched roofs with a large number of superstructures in the form of turrets, viewing windows or steps, ordinary shingles should not be used, as the material consumption will be too high. If you need a complex slope shape, it is better to purchase bituminous shingles or other similar material with a large number of small elements to cover it.

Metal and polycarbonate garage with pitched roof

Financial opportunities... Taking this factor into account, it is necessary to consider not only the cost of the roofing material itself, but also the rafter system for it, fasteners and installation. The most economical options are traditionally corrugated board, ondulin or metal tiles. To install a roof made of ceramic or cement-sand tiles, you will need a complex rafter system, as well as a rather difficult installation, so these materials will cost much more.

The complexity of laying the coating... Projects, photos of houses with a pitched roof always look attractive, but do not forget that, most likely, professional builders were engaged in the installation. If you do not have specialized construction skills, then this process can be much more difficult, and the result is worse than in the photo. Therefore, you should not choose the most difficult material to lay on the go.

If you want your roof to look attractive from an aesthetic point of view, and also have high performance, then pay great attention to the complexity of the installation of one or another roof covering.

Shed roof ridge design drawing: 1 - roofing sandwich panel, 2 - wall sandwich panel, 3, 4 and 5 - shaped elements, 6 - sealing tape, 7 and 8 - self-drilling screws, 9 - basalt insulation

Appearance... This parameter entirely depends on your aesthetic preferences, as well as the general style in which the building is made. As you can see in the photo, garages with pitched roofs can also look very attractive, not to mention residential buildings. The main thing here is to choose the right texture and color of the roofing material.

After you have familiarized yourself with all the above parameters, you can proceed directly to the purchase of the material. The modern construction market offers the following options:

  • corrugated board
  • ondulin
  • metal tile
  • bituminous shingles
  • ceramic roof tiles
  • aluminum sheets
  • slate
  • roofing steel
  • membrane covering.

Under any type of roofing, it is necessary to mount a crate

If you are wondering how to make a pitched roof on a shed or other similar building, then you should consider the advantages and disadvantages of each type of material.

What is good about metal tiles

Metal roofing is a sheet roofing material, the sheet thickness of which is up to 0.6 mm. In section, the tile sheet has a layered structure, and the top layer is covered with a special polymer coating. Thanks to these design features, the material is characterized by a high level of reliability and durability.

The service life, which is indicated by the manufacturer, is about 15 years, but with proper installation and maintenance, it can be twice as long. In addition, the material boasts the following advantages:

  • well withstands heavy loads - up to 1500 kg / m²

Metal tiles - durable and wear-resistant roofing material

  • it is easy to install, which allows it to be used even by beginners in the construction industry
  • it is not uncommon to see in the photo of private houses single-pitched roofs made of metal tiles, which clearly show that the surface of the material imitates natural tiles
  • the kit contains all the fasteners and components necessary for installation
  • has a low weight, which allows you to reduce the load on the rafter system
  • is relatively inexpensive.

There are not so many significant disadvantages of this type of roofing material, which makes it very popular on the market. Features of its design can enhance the noise effects from wind, hail or rain, and with a complex roof configuration, too much material consumption is obtained.

Helpful advice! For a roof made of metal, the arrangement of reinforced sound insulation is relevant, since the rain drumming on the roof will not be to everyone's liking.

The peculiarities of the installation of this type of material include the fact that the optimal slope of the slope for it should be at least 12 °. Also, when installing the insulation, it is imperative to make a vapor barrier layer, otherwise condensation will form on the inside of the tiles. The lathing, according to most projects of frame houses with a shed roof made of metal tiles, is made of timber.

As a result, we can say that metal tiles are one of the most unpretentious roofing materials in installation, which has a lot of advantages.

Installation of a pitched roof made of corrugated board

Decking is corrugated metal sheets. A pitched roof made of corrugated board does not look as attractive as from metal tiles, but the material itself will cost you less, so it is a good option for a limited budget. The advantages of the material include the following:

  • long service life - with correct installation, it is about 20 years
  • small weight of sheets of material, which makes it easier to install it yourself
  • high level of strength
  • easy installation and unpretentious operation
  • a wide range of color solutions for the implementation of your design ideas
  • large selection of sheet sizes.

A good option for erecting a gable roof from corrugated board is for a garage and other outbuildings. It should be borne in mind that the material also has its drawbacks:

  • increased noise effects from rain, hail or gusts of wind. You can get rid of this only by installing a thick layer of sound insulation and properly assembling the entire roofing pie
  • susceptibility to corrosion. If you are making a pitched roof from corrugated board with your own hands, then you need to monitor the integrity of the polymer coating of the material. In places where it is absent, rust quickly forms, so such areas should be immediately covered with a special compound
  • nondescript appearance compared to other roofing materials.

Installation diagram of a roof made of profiled sheets

As for the features of the installation of such a roof, they consist in the fact that when laying, you need to act very carefully, and you should only step on the bottom of the wave, otherwise you risk deforming the sheet. If you want to know how to make a pitched roof on a garage or an outbuilding so that it lasts as long as possible, then the angle of inclination should be 20-45 degrees. In this case, snow or debris will not accumulate on the roof, thanks to the flat and slippery surface of the material.

The roof rafter system is made of corrugated board in the same way as for other types of roofing materials. For this, dry boards and beams are used, it is best if they are made of coniferous wood. The material itself is characterized by a very low weight, therefore, additional strengthening of the rafters and rafters can be omitted.

The photo of gazebos with a pitched roof made of corrugated board shows that for this type of construction, waterproofing and insulation are not needed, just one layer of material is enough. Of course, if you need to build a shed with a pitched roof from this material, then you cannot do without a minimum roofing pie.

The professional sheet is ideal for decorating the roof of a small country house

The corrugated board is fixed with self-tapping screws. The sheets should be fastened to each other with an overlap of 25-30 cm, and when fastening, you need to move from the bottom up. The step between the fasteners depends on the type of sheet and the size of the wave, so this parameter should be specified upon purchase.

Helpful advice! Do not screw the screws too tight, otherwise you will damage the insulation and the top layer of the coating. In order to prevent the attachment points from corroding, it is recommended to cover them with special paint or varnish.

As you can see, the corrugated board is mounted as easily as metal tiles, while having a slightly less aesthetic appeal, but also less cost. A good option for outbuildings and non-residential buildings.

Ondulin roof

Ondulin is also called euro-slate, and it looks like corrugated sheets of cellulose fibers, which are impregnated with bitumen. The top layer of ondulin is a special coating that protects against moisture and other negative phenomena. If you plan to make a lean-to roof of an extension to the house from ondulin, then you should be aware of its positive and negative qualities.

The first category includes the following:

  • a high level of resistance to all kinds of negative climatic influences, for example, to rain or snow
  • high longitudinal flexibility, which allows it not to break under the influence of large loads, but only to bend
  • very low sheet weight - only 4 kg / m²
  • can be mounted on top of an old roof as a secondary coating
  • has a long service life - about 50 years
  • boasts high water resistance.

Ondulin sheets are made from bitumen-impregnated cellulose-based fibers

  • not particularly attractive appearance, there is practically no variety of colors and shades (usually there are only three options on the market), the relief pattern is weak
  • loses its color approximately 5 years after the start of operation
  • at low temperatures it becomes brittle and can easily break under pressure.

In the photo of single-pitched roofs of private houses made of ondulin, it is clearly seen that this type of roofing material is characterized by a relatively small slope of the slope - from 6 degrees. By the way, the type of lathing for this material largely depends on the slope of the slope.

Ondulin is good because it can be used to build any type of buildings. It is used in private construction, agriculture, in the construction of industrial buildings and outbuildings to the house. Its price is not too high, so this choice will not hit your wallet.

Features of the roof of bituminous tiles

The so-called bitumen shingles are based on fiberglass or organic cellulose. Sheets of these materials are impregnated with bitumen (hence the name), and the outside is covered with basalt granulate. This type of roofing is much more expensive than the previous ones, but this is more than offset by its advantages:

  • when installing bituminous tiles, a very small percentage of waste is obtained
  • it can be laid on slopes with complex geometry and a large number of superstructures
  • boasts excellent sound and waterproof performance
  • the weight of a square meter of material is up to 20 kg
  • tolerates temperature changes well, as well as high and low temperatures
  • does not burn, and is also characterized by self-extinguishing
  • has an attractive appearance and a wide range of colors and design options

Installation of bituminous shingles does not cause any particular difficulties.

  • durable - up to 60 years of service
  • resistant to mechanical stress
  • can imitate the pattern of other types of tiles.

For a one-story house with a pitched roof, bituminous shingles are almost the ideal choice if you have enough money for it. The disadvantages of the material include the following:

  • increased brittleness of the material at low temperatures
  • for installation, a continuous crate and ventilation system equipment is required
  • high price.

The project of a one-story house with a pitched roof made of bituminous tiles implies a slope angle of 18 degrees.

Slate as one of the cheapest materials

The main advantage of such a roofing material as slate is its service life. With proper installation and care, it exceeds 50 years, which is a very good indicator. In addition, slate has the following advantages:

  • very inexpensive
  • does not conduct electricity
  • resistant to corrosion and high temperatures.

The disadvantages include the large weight of the sheets, as a result of which it is difficult to mount them alone, as well as the fragility of slate, the harmfulness of asbestos dust to health and an unattractive appearance.

Helpful advice! If you choose slate as a roof covering, then the grayness of its design can be diluted by painting the surface of the sheets with special paints.

The service life of a slate roof is more than 50 years

Roofing steel and aluminum - cheap and cheerful

In terms of cost, roofing steel may well compete with slate and other inexpensive materials. Its advantages include ease of installation and operation, low weight and the ability to cover slopes with a complex configuration. The latter parameter is achieved due to the great flexibility of the steel sheets.

Unfortunately, this material also has a number of significant drawbacks. The main one is a very high level of noise during precipitation. In case of rain or hail, even the highest-quality sound insulation does not save the noise of steel sheets, therefore this type of material is used mainly for outbuildings.

Another disadvantage is its modest appearance. It is so beautiful to make a single-pitched roof for a bath from roofing steel as from a metal tile - it will not work with all the desire, therefore steel sheets are used where economy is in the first place, and not design.

To give an aesthetic appearance to a steel or aluminum roof, you can use painting

A roof made of aluminum sheets is characterized by almost the same advantages and disadvantages as of steel. The only significant difference is the installation method. The aluminum roof is attached to the lathing with the help of special cleats - tongues that allow the sheets to move at temperature extremes, thus eliminating their deformation.

Ceramic roof tiles - commitment to tradition

The project of a two-storey house with a pitched roof made of ceramic tiles has been considered classic for more than one hundred years. Nowadays, this material can be made from fired clay or from a mixture of sand and cement. The properties of both options are very similar, but the second is characterized by greater thickness and rough design.

The advantages of shingles include the following qualities:

  • high level of heat and noise insulation
  • resistance to all kinds of climatic influences
  • environmental friendliness
  • very long service life - over 100 years
  • a large selection of design options and colors.

Ceramic tiles are heavy and expensive

If we talk about the disadvantages of shingles, then this is a lot of weight, because of which you will have to mount a reinforced rafter system, complexity in installation and a rather high cost. On the other hand, a shingle roof will give your home an aristocratic look, which is worth paying for.

How shed roofs from different materials look on the photo

If you want your house or other building to look as attractive as possible, then you should use not the cheapest materials for arranging the roof. For example, natural tiles of classic red color will immediately tell guests about your good taste and well-being.

Simple pitched roof built for a garden gazebo

If you are using budget options for roofing materials, then try to select them in such a way that they represent your home in the most favorable light. Before choosing a material, it is recommended that you look at photographs of buildings with it on the Internet, so you will learn a more complete picture of its aesthetic qualities.

Country gazebos are simple and beautiful

To date, many modern building and finishing materials have appeared on sale. Therefore, it is possible to move away from the use of familiar building materials and create unique designs of gazebos with your own hands. In the understanding of many people, a gazebo is just a place in which to relax. Indeed, this is so. But now kitchens, couches, swings and even barbecues are being created in the gazebos.

Due to the fact that modern building materials are light and elegant, you can assemble gazebos yourself. The complexity is determined only by your own ideas. On the Internet you can find a huge number of photos that will inspire you to create a unique gazebo on your site:

Portable design

If we take into account the various characteristics of the gazebos, then we can conditionally divide these buildings into groups. So there is:

  • open gazebos (easy to build, used mainly in summer),
  • closed gazebos (construction with walls, windows and doors),
  • portable gazebo (easily disassembled and assembled).

There are a huge variety of building materials that can be used to build gazebos with your own hands. So, wood, metal, glass and plastic items are used. In addition, stone is actively used. Stone gazebos have recently become popular. Here, even those raw materials that no one uses at all can be used: plastic bottles, pallets, trees, as well as other improvised materials for gazebos. It all depends on what kind of fantasy the owner has.

Drawing of a gazebo for a small area

As for the size of the future gazebo, everything is determined by the area of the site itself. If there is not a lot of space, then the gazebo should not be created very large. The configuration is square, rectangular, round, in the form of a hexagon, octahedron. Sometimes they create gazebos in the shape of an oval.

Advice! If this is your first time creating a gazebo with your own hands, then you need to use photographs, drawings, expert advice. All information can be found on the Internet. This will allow you to avoid mistakes in the future.

As a roofing material for gazebos, slate, corrugated board, flexible tiles, cellular or monolithic polycarbonate are chosen. If we consider that many of these materials are very plastic, then you can make not only single-slope, but also multi-slope, as well as spherical, arched, domed and other forms of roofs. Gazebos with climbing green plants as a roof are common.

Gazebos are especially popular today, in which summer kitchens are equipped. Barbecues, fireplaces or barbecues are also built in there. Remember that to create such structures, you will need to fulfill certain requirements. And again: it is necessary to have drawings, sketches and designs not only of the entire gazebo, but also of the stove, fireplace, for example. This will allow you to accurately cope with the work, as well as spend a minimum of funds.
