SOUNDS EMITTED BY ANIMALS

The sounds of the pink flamingo

The pink flamingo, scientific name Phoenicopterus roseus of the family Phoenicopteridae, it is a very noisy bird especially during the mating period. The males, in fact, all together, perform a sort of dance with quite sustained rhythms and with very loud cries from the nasal tone, especially in flight. Even when they feel threatened they emit noises similar to a high-pitched whistle that recalls that of the geese.

Sounds of the pink flamingo - Sounds emitted by the pink flamingo

Although the pink flamingo is often associated with the great African salt lakes of Kenya and Tanzania, it is not difficult to meet it also in Europe: a few thousand flamingos, for example, live in the Camargue and winter in the Rhone delta. These characteristic birds are also present in Italy, especially in Sardinia, in the Apulian salt pans and even in those of Comacchio in Emilia Romagna. Indeed, this regularly occurs in southern France and Spain. For about a year the Po delta has been chosen not only for resting but also for reproduction. That of the pink flamingos (Phenicopterus ruber) is one of the five current species of the flamingo family, the only one present in Europe.

These waders, whose height even reaches 150cm, with very long and thin legs and neck, are equipped with a curious beak curved downwards. The truly remarkable height, which gives them an imposing appearance, does not correspond to an adequate weight that rarely reaches 4kg. They are very related to brackish water and the low shores of salt lakes. They nest in colonies, in shallow water or on muddy banks, building a strange cone-shaped nest.

The work for the construction of the nest is carried out by both members of the couple but it is the male who gives a greater contribution by working both sitting and standing and digging in the ground thanks to the powerful beak.

During the hatching the flamingos are literally sitting on the cone the female lays only one egg, of a pale white and large size. It alternates with its mate in the brooding for about four weeks, at the end of which a gray shaded baby is born that will be able to take off only after a weaning of about a couple of months. The baby is nourished by a red milk secreted by the parent's goiter, rich in proteins and glucose, suitable for promoting the necessary rapid growth. In case of unfavorable conditions, flamingos can even give up nesting for years. This suggests why the flamingo population is increasing very slowly.

The males begin the courtship by gathering in groups and remaining almost "on tiptoe" with the neck extended. Then they begin to wiggle their heads, throwing their shrill call over and over. To attract the females, they flap their wings for a long time in a sort of propitiatory salute.

They feed on molluscs, crustaceans, small fish and unicellular algae that they get by walking in not very deep waters with the head completely immersed and the beak used as a sieve. Sometimes they also eat in deeper waters, diving almost completely and managing not to sink into the mud thanks to their large webbed feet. Since, while looking for food, the head is turned backwards, through the centuries the upper jaw has atrophied while the lower one has become enlarged and surpasses the other in terms of size.

The beak contains numerous filtering lamellae that let the silt escape and retain the organic particles that are thus ingested. The very stubby tongue prevents large objects from being ingested. Precisely for this curious way of getting food and because of the great crowding flamingos often clash and sketch short but theatrical "fights". In fact, it is not rare to see them with their necks twisted and intent on emitting shrill noises.

The speed with which they attack or dodge a blow is truly impressive. These fake fights do not last more than a few seconds and usually end without any consequence for the contenders who suddenly, as if nothing had happened, start looking for food again plunging their heads under water. Since they have the habit of sticking together, due to their large number the flamingos do not take long to run out of food in a certain area and are thus forced to abandon it to look for a new richer area. It may be strange that these birds always move in groups and choose as "hunting" lakes or lagoons of considerable width rather than stationing in less numerous groups along small stretches of water. But the reason is to be found in the great security they get by being in a huge compact group in the event of some attack by predators. The color of the feathers seems to be due to the various types of carotene found in the algae they are fond of. Flamingos spend a lot of time cleaning their feathers, much more than any other waterfowl, as, by regularly stationing in areas with a high salt concentration, the salt sticks to them and must be regularly removed.

Once the cleaning operations are finished, the flamingo shows its strange way of resting and sleeping, resting on one leg, and with the neck folded to them and the head abandoned on the body. Usually for sleeping he chooses small islets or shallow waters not far from the shore. It is a bird which, in freedom, does not allow itself to be approached very easily, on the contrary when at the slightest sudden movement, a frightened flamingo takes off, triggers a chain reaction, such as to lead the others to flee. It is a very spectacular situation. Initially the flamingos flap their wings showing the upper part, of a very intense red, then the preparations begin to take off. In principle, it is a rather clumsy race that does not seem to lead to any result, but when a sufficient speed is reached the flamingo rises from the ground showing unsuspected aerial skills. During the flight the neck is very much extended forward, but slightly hanging, whilst the legs are kept stretched, therefore very protruding with respect to the tail.

The large wings, combined with a slow and rhythmic cadence, give it a truly unique elegance. The same sensation is felt by observing them when, after a large vault, they glide over the water remaining for an imperceptible moment perfectly suspended on the landing point. If, on the other hand, you want to observe them closely, you need to have a good dose of patience and a towel to spread out on the muddy beach. Sitting like this, the flamingos do not feel any danger and after a while they accept the intruder almost as if they were part of the landscape. The banks of the Camargue in the evening are filled with tourists who want to see the spectacle of the sunset. The dying sun transforms the colors, and the pink of the flamingos combined with the blue of the water take on a warm pastel hue that arouses a poignant and evocative sensation in the improvised spectators.

Photographing Pink Flamingos

The variable focal length of what is used to define a long zoom, compared to a fixed lens, is advantageous for a precise reason: birds, with their sudden changes of direction, often force the photographer to continually alter the frame. In this case there is no doubt that the zoom guarantees superior versatility. However, it is necessary to get used to this technique because it is not as "simple" as one might think. Again, and in the same way: it is important to achieve a perfect knowledge of one's own camera in order to be able to operate with maximum speed. In fact, you often have to work in difficult shooting conditions and with little time available. So it becomes necessary to know how to pass in a few seconds, and perhaps without taking your eye off the viewfinder, from a multizone metering reading to that spot, or to know how to quickly and naturally block the exposure. Only in this way is it possible, at times, to capture high-level images.
